  • Yes option 2 does look very neat however, I have finished putting together the remote control already. I will have pictures to show everyone on Monday. Look forward to hearing your comments on my soldering job etc. It was a hell of a job.

Now I am focusing on getting the the proper CHDK, and the script all loaded into the camera. By the way I want to test out the camera and remote shutter in the store...before I buy it so that I dont end up having to pay a restocking fee.

In the same way you transfer pics from your camera to the PIC, don't some cameras allow you to transfer files from the computer (via USB) to the camera memory card ?  maybe I could do this to download CHDK instead of using a card reader which I don't have right now. Will have to borrow or buy it.

    Cheers :)

There was/is an app somewhere for uploading CHDK to the SD in camera (I used it once, found it probably from FAQ in Wikia), but I'd really suggest you buy a card reader. For transfering scripts to the SD and such.

  • looks good to me :) (hint: by resizing the pics you can achieve a) less upload for you b) less download for the users c) less posts d) less payload for forum hoster and e) more happy moderators ;)

hm, if i was an owner of a camera store, i would definitly not let a potential buyer put some self-soldered device into one of my cameras and also let him "update the firmware". be aware of the security guards :D good luck on your mission :)

by the way uploading files onto the camera via pc is tricky, it can be done, but you can mostly only transfer files to the DCIM directory, which is of no use for chdk (since it cannot boot from there).

  • Will I be able to download photos from the camera once the photos are taken ? Using the cameras USB cable in the normal way or do I have to take the card out or do something ?

I guess the battery can just stay attached so long as the button isn't being pressed? It is not constantly drawing power right?

Thanks again...should know soon if all this works.

I think I got the CHDK stuff figured out etc.

  • Yes, you should be able to use either the camera on a USB cable or a card reader to download (and erase) the JPEG files...

If you want to do more (load CHKD, make card bootable, format at FAT16, download RAW, or upload scripts)--it is possible you will need to use a card reader for some/all of these functions. The camera and Canon software are not setup to manage the additional files used with CHDK.

If the camera is on--it is drawing power... Because you are using the external viewer--plugging in the AV cables turns off the LCD back-light on the camera--reducing power usage by quite a bit (1/2 or more?)... You may will probably need to change the camera's power save/auto-off functions.

Get a good set of batteries (Sanyo Eneloops or other hybrid NiMH batters have very low self discharge, 80% capacity after 1 year of storage--unlike regular NiMH which, after some use, can be dead after a month of non-use).

You could also use non-rechargeable Lithium AA batteries (1.5 volt). Great for very cold or hot weather, light weight, and will power the camera the longest of any type.... However, they are not cheap to replace (something like $2 each). Or, lastly, buy/make an external battery pack.

how about the wheelchair ? that should have quite a powerful battery - maybe even a connection to power
    external devices.

  • He can have accessories attached to the wheel chair but he is not using a power wheel chair that has one of those large batteries (like a car batter) attache to it.

  • One other option to reduce power usage a bit--Change IS (image stabilization) to "on when shooting" (rather than continuous)... Will save a bit more power.
