Newbie issues, still - [CHDK for Dummies - The Very First Steps]

OK. Let's take it from the beginning. First, i need to know:

1) are you running windows ? 2000, xp, vista ?

2) do you have a cardreader

3) what kind of card do you have (size + type, is it SDHC or not)

Hi,

I have a G9 with firmware 1.00F.  I was greatly looking fwd to CHDK.  There is now a version that should work with my firmware though I've had no luck  with the installation. i am new to CHDK but a fiend uses it on his A650 and I had been following the development for months.  I am stumped.

I used the file in reply #52 on the forum.   
G9 porting progress

Used a 4GB SDHC card extreme III formatted in FAT16.  Unzipped the diskbot.bin and put it in the root dir.  The camera won't boot :-(((   Only once in awhile can I get the CHDK menu to come up using the print button as "alt"  Using XP on the notebook and an external cardreader.  I confirmed the file was there and tried reformatting and reinstalling.  Final thing was to set the write prevent tab on the card.
Any help  very much appreciated.

Nice ! i have a comparable setup here, so that should make troubleshooting easier.
Sorry for the delay in answering, but lets get started:

1) copy all pics from card to computer, if you hadn't done so yet, because we will format the card

2) unless you already have it, get CardTricks here CardTricks141.zip - 432 kB

3) make sure your card is not write protected, and insert in card reader

4) start CardTricks and click the small SD card picture to select your card.
    the properties of the card will now be shown; first check the 'Card Size:' entry to
    make sure the size meets your expectations (avoid having USB sticks in your
    computer while doing this, as you might select those instead)

5) Once you're sure you've actually selected your SD card click 'Format as FAT' ;
    after a couple of warnings the card will be formatted, and a 'ver.req' file will
    be written on it (this allows you to easily get your firmware version on screen)

6) Click 'Make Bootable' this will make sure you can make CHDK autostart
    by simply setting the write protect on the card.

7) Optional step, but please only skip if you're really sure you got you firmware version right:
    - Close CardTricks, 'safe remove' your card and insert it in your camera.
    - Start camera and make sure it's in review mode.
    - Press and hold down Func.Set, and press Display while still holding Func.Set
    - You should now see something like:
         Canon PowerShot A580
         P-ID:3177 PAL D
         Firmware Ver GM1.01B
         NoError
         Jan 24 2008 20:56:25
      in this case, your firmware would be 1.01B
    - you can now shut down your camera, put the card back in the reader,
      allow a little time for the card to be recognized by windows, then
      start CardTricks and select your card as in previous steps

8.) Click 'Download CHDK', it will open the 2 autobuild pages in your browser.
    Select the CHDK Download - build 0.6.6, revision #545 one and find the CHDK version
    for your firmware; be sure to select from the column 'Complete', this will assure
    you get all extra fonts, readme's etc. as well.
    Dowload it and remember where you saved it.

9) Now click 'CHDK->Card' and browse to your downloaded file; a small box saying
    'Unpacking ...' should show up. Once it disappears, you're ready:
    close CardTricks, and 'safe-remove' your card.

10) Put the card in your camera and turn it on in review mode.
      press Menu button, Canon menu appears
      find the 'Firmware Update' menu entry and select it
      confirm updating by selecting OK and CHDK should start,
      the logo should appear on screen, then disappear again.
      To get to the CHDK menu, first press <Alt> button (not
      sure which one it is on your cam) pressing this shows/hides
      "<Alt>" at bottom center of the screen. Pressing 'Menu'
      while <Alt> is showing on screen will open the CHDK
      main menu.
      Ok, CHDK is now up and running. Just don't forget to
      quit <Alt> mode before switching to picture taking mode,
      if you don't CHDK will run it's default script and not allow
      you to take pictures.
      If you ever want to make CHDK automatically start, all
      you need to do is activate the card's write protect - thanks to
      CHDK the cam will still be able to write to card; this is
      completely reversible: just unprotect your card and the
      cam will start like any 'normal' Canon cam, but with the
      option to 'Firmware Update' to CHDK.

OK, there you have it - a 10 point plan

Thanks for that nice summary.  Any ideas on what is wrong with loading CHDK on my G9?  I know that I can't use the firmware update method yet, but the CHDK file and the ver.req were on the card OK.  The cam would not go into photo taking mode.  The alt button would only work on occasion. If I shut off the write protect the cam will boot normally, so I suspect the card is OK despite the Fat16 format.  I did use card tricks to format the card and did click on make bootable.  I did manually load  the diskbot.bin after unzipping it.   I will grovel if need be. Have been watching the progress of the port to the G9 for months and very much hope to use it.
Very much appreciate any help.  I hope this thread is in the correct place and apologize if not.  I am a Newbie to the Newbie thread.

Thanks so much for taking a look.  I could get into the "alt" to come up by pressing the Print button on the G9 but only every 3 or 4 times.  I then could get into the chdk menu and I reset a few things about the histogram.  When I tried to get into picture taking mode, nothing happened---no lens extension and no image.  The developer said the 100F version worked fine for him and in fact the 1.00D version worked on his F cam just fine. I hope there is something to try.
Thanks again.  I had been watching developement  for the G9 for 5 months and very mcuh hope to get it to work.

Phew,
It now works!!!  Hurrah.  Perhaps an evil
sd card despite extreme 3.  Took it out and put it back in.  CHDK menu would come up each time as it should in alt mode.  Then had to press the shutter to get chdk to start---duh, newbie error.
G9 reborn---esp like the separate channel histo to prevent blocking up the reds.  Time lapse should be interesting. I think.
Thanks for taking a look.  The ways people can foul up a straight forward procedure appear to be infinite.

because the old sd card was not doing its job right!
i made it with the new 4gb sdhc extreme.

Which anti-virus software? Mine (Sophos) reported no issues.

I tried to install CHDK on a Ixus SD 300/Ixus 40.
It took about four hours and a lot still not work.
Every missing hint costs between 1 minute and 1 hour.

First: Extract the files to the ROOT DIRECTORY of the card (Important: ROOT DIRECTORY, not DCIM)
Second: Select Play mode, Press and hold FuncSet (in the middle of the ring), then press Disp (left lower button).
Third: SWITCH THE CAMERA OFF (important, otherwise you do not see the firmware update menu entry), then switch the camera on.
Fourth: Replay Mode, the Menu, then Play (|>), lowest menu item is "Firm update" (This is new!). Select this and press okay.
Fifth: Press the direct print button, the the menu button to enter the alternative Menu.

Unclear: How to make the firmware auto bootable. Misc => Make card bootable flickers, but generates no message and has also no effect. After switching off the camera you have to do the whole stuff again.

Unclear: DNG can not be selected. Bad Pixel list is empty (but exist) after running the badpixel script.
Cannot load CHDK/badpixel.bin Please run CHDK/.../badpixel.lua

Unclear: There's no program to handle Isus SD 300/Ixus 40 RAW images.
