Modify a card reader

  • If you feel annoying to switch the lock tab every time when you want to refresh your chdk build(especially developers), there is
    the ultimate solution  :D
This helps for those who broke this tab(and almost the whole card), like me....
Only you need to connect those two pins together like i did on the image.

  • Same thing I have made on all my cardreaders. But multi-cardreader after this don't erase my xD cards :) Maybe resistor instead of short-circuit is better solution.

  • Hi dzsemx,
use superglue when the first cracks are formed, i have prepared 2 cards this way - but for the card on your pic it's alittle too late (looks a bit like there are some mice in your camera ?)

Now i have 2 cheap plastic card readers which ignores the lock (without modification), that saves lots of glue  :haha

  • Oooh can you link me to where you bought those? My cheap plastic card reader ($6) looks at the lock unfortunately...gets really annoying at times. but if I can buy a cheap (<$10) reader which doesn't see the lock...it would help. I am constantly copying stuff to my card :D

  • i've got Transcend Multi-Card Reader M5, a nice thing, but it detects position of the lock switch of SD. Decided to remove it.
Maybe someone post this small instruction into Wiki..

     ;)

The two points (red and blue) should not have been soldered together as in the picture. Instead the rightmost one (blue) should be connected to the ground to force unlock. The left position (red) is used to indicate the card presence (at least for my card reader i-connect model).

    Attached the updated schematics.

Note: I use a switch instead of soldering the blue pin together for flexibility reason.

  • Thank you all, I just did it to my reader, connecting the left blue thing to the casing, works great!
