Has anyone tried booting 1D mark3 firmware on a 40D? The hardware seems to be pretty similar

I don't know how to decrypt 1D mark3 firmware, so I cant try it

They have different sensors I thought, so directly is impossible. And changing them the right way is very hard?

Both have 10.1Mpix effective pixels though

It's worth a try!

Yes but for starters, the AF unit is different. A lot of things may be different, such as memory size, mmio addresses, keys, key 'locations' (memory) and so on. The camera likely won't boot anymore but you're free to try if you can spare one. Also, since the firmware is stuffed with assertions, even if it does boot I doubt it'll run properly.

Some differences which are likely show-stoppers:
- Different cropfactor and sensor sensitivity -> different sensor
- Dual DIGIC III vs single DIGIC III
- Different AF units
- No support for EF-S lenses

plus

different amount of function buttons
1Ds has two card slots, 1 CF and one SD.

The main differences between the software of the 40D and 1D are
- configurable compression ration for the JPG's
- AF Microadjustment

What els do you need/want?

Hello !
I'm a french photographe, and i've been hanging to this forum very intensively ^^
AF-Adjustement on 40D would be crazy !

I haven't any knowledge about how to developp that,
the only thing i can do is telling you that's good to see that some people are working on that thing !
You're my heroes ! ;-)

T keep your spirits up, my main focus is to get AF microadjustments in the 40D.

The FW contains a list of EF lenses which indicates that the software is proably in the firmware. I have located two procedures that (as far as I can see) are not used and that are linkt to AFSHIFT, which I think is AF Microadjustements.

Ik keep on searching

I just joined the forums and was pleasingly surprised with latest progress. You guys should keep it up !
AF microadjust is indeed very desirable.

But to me, what is really lacking is ISO safety shift aka "Auto ISO". I know there is an autoISO on 40D but it is totally flawed and unusable.

1D & 1Ds Mk III both have the following custom functions ( from 1d mkIII manual) :

---C.Fn I -8 Safety Shift
0:Disable
1:Enable(Tv/Av)

This works in the shutter-priority AE (Tv) and apterture-priority AE (Av) modes. When the subject’s brightness changes erratically and the correct autoexposure cannot be obtained, the camera will change the exposure setting automatically to obtain a correct exposure.
2: Enable (ISO speed)

This works in the Program AE, shutter-priority AE, and aperture-priority AE modes. When the subject’s brightness changes erratically and the correct autoexposure cannot be obtained, the camera will change the ISO speed within 100-3200 automatically to obtain a correct exposure.
---C.Fn I-12 Set shutter speed range
Disable:The settable shutter speed range will be 1/8000 sec. to 30 sec.

Enable : The settable shutter speed will range from the highest shutter speed to the lowest shutter speed set with [Register]

Register : The highest shutter speed can be registered within 1/8000 sec. to 1/250 sec., and the lowest shutter speed can be registered within 30sec. to 1/60sec. After entering the settings, select [Apply]
---C.Fn I-13 Set aperture speed range

Disable:The settable aperture will range from the camera-attached lens’ maximum aperture to minimum aperture.

Enable : The settable aperture will range from the smallest to largest aperture set with [Register]

Which when combined properly, emulate Nikon AutoISO.

Here I quote the author Pekka Saarinen from his review of the mkIII telling us how combining those Custom functions achieve auto ISO.(Canon EOS 1D Mark III review)

"(...)When you combine this with custom settings for limiting shutter speeds and apertures you can set up a shooting environment with some insurance for success. For example I have set minimum shutter speed to 1/60, set ISO safety shift on, set ISO to 1600 and Tv mode to about 1/160. Now what happens when I shoot a live event is that when selected shutter speed is not possible with ISO 1600 Mark III raises ISO to 2000, then 2500 and 3200. When in Av mode and ISO 3200 is reached, it starts lowering shutter speed - but not below 1/60, this I have set to ensure reasonable stopping of movement without photographer having to change all settings during shoot. Now all we need is M mode ISO shift.(...)"

That's Canon's way of doing it so far. I think Nikon's way is more elegant (one single menu) but if we can have canon's way by "copying" from the mkIII firmware that would be a good start !

Anyway, godspeed hacking heroes Smiley
