thanks for replying fe50!
i just did the ver.req and it says:

Canon PowerShot SD400
P-ID: 310E NT

Firmware Ver GM1.01B
E16
Mar 29 2005   21:16:07

so im assuming im using the right CHDK since i got CHDK 1.01B.

however i was wondering what E16 meant. i get it every time i try to record 60fps video. it is not CHDK's fault though since i got it before i even knew about CHDK. can you shed some light on this for me?

and also one more question about optical zoom in video mode - whenever i zoom its shows bright blue letters at the top center and i think its still digital zoom and not optical. when i turn off digital zoom, i can't zoom at all even though i've turned on optical zoom for video in CHDK. can you clear this up for me please? thanks in advance

...Firmware Ver GM1.01B...E16...

On all Canon digital compact cameras the error code E16 means that something is wrong with the (lens) mechanism, normally this error code is shown if it cannot contract/extract or focus.

You have (as i, too  ;) ) also the E16 message in your firmware information, so at least once there was a problem with the mechanic.
I don't know why the code E16 appears while video recording, perhaps there's an problem with the RAM or your SD card (speed / timing ?)...

I heard that sometimes after removing the batterys for 3-4 hours the E16 / E18 errors may disappear, if there's not a real mechanical problem...

Yep, the blue letters are the Canons digital zoom OSD display.

Currently the optical zoom in video mode is working only with a script, i've attached a sample test script to this post (file "optzoom.bas").

Load the script, start it with the shutter button & use the zoom rocker, test the wheel buttons for focus etc. also - look to the script code for more details, i've used it only for some short functionality tests, it is not optimized for the SD400...

And also have fun with the good old Ixus 50  ::)

Well, I wondered also about the optical zoom support.

If you disable the digital zoom the optical zoom is disabled too. But if digital zoom on camera and opitcal zoom on CHDK is enabled. Sometimes I can use the optical zoom to. But it seems just to work after recording a few seconds zooming completly in and out with the digital zoom. And after that sometimes the opitcal zoom works.

It would be great if someone can fix this.

I've 101B.
