Use a point and shoot canon as a trigger for en EOS

Hi all,

I really love the lightning stuff in the CHDK, but unfortunately I cannot use it with the new EOS 1000D I'm about to buy.

But I was wandering...could I use the compact to trigger the EOS? I just need to modify the lightning script so that, instead of taking a photo, send a signal on a cable...and that, with very little electronic, can trigger the EOS.

Is it possible? Any comment or help?

Of course.

Instead of taking a photo, light an LED.
A simple photo-diode or photo-transistor interface will trigger your EOS.

In the 'early' days, that is how firmware was dumped.

A simple photo-diode or photo-transistor interface will trigger your EOS.

Ah, very interesting...yes, you're right...and this also solves the issue of electrically separating the 2 devices...the photodiode can be used to short circuit the 2 pins dedicated to the remote shutter...

I just wonder if time-response wise this is fast enough...which is the distance from on bit to the following in the former way to obtain the dump?

Ok, 9600 bps, it's more or less 0,1ms between bits...veeeery fast😉

As soon as I buy the EOS l'll try it (meanwhile I could also mess around with the led...it's something that do not add so much delay...I could include a led blink everytime the camera takes a shot in the lightning script...)

perhaps it is possible to trigger the dslr via an external flash, which in turn is triggered by the chdk camera's flash. i will conduct some tests as soon as i have the cables.

Triggering will work only if the second flash is used in "slave" mode. EOS exposure should be long enough to squeeze in the second flash. I have not yet figured a way how to activate EOS with no additional hardware. EOS IR remote receiver does not work since the the proper code is not received. Wired input requires a phototransistor + hardware...

But, if someone out there can scope the bit sequence emitted from the IR remote, then coders could program the same code(guessing, 12 bit) into the output LED. Then put master camera (P&S) so that the LED can be seen by EOS IR receiver.

Oh, yes: you can use your digital camera to record the IR transmitter code sequence: complete darkness, exposure 2 s or more, sweep IR while pointing to the lens and press a button. You will see a series of dots in the image, that is your code.

I'd be eager to use the phototransistor+HW solution...but with my camera is impossible (until now) to make a led blink (one of the few limitation of the porting). As soon as the limitation is overcome I'll start testing.

You may want to rig one of these through the standard external shutter control:

If you want to do living things you may want to use some IR motion detector (e.g. from your front door).

I already found the first one, but not the second one. In case the porting problem is not eventually solved, well, I'll have to build one of those things...
