CHDK for T1i / 500D?
« on: 13 / August / 2009, 09:14:34 »
I love my T1i. I wish it had a few little things, like ability to lock some settings that I have to set each time I shoot video. Any chance of CHDK for T1i (USA) 500D (Europe)?

All the best!

Present no port exists.  You can take a look here for the status of various cameras.  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/For_Developers

Also if you wish to help here is a good starting place

Since the T1i and the 5D Mark II share the same OS and DIGIC4, you might have success porting my Magic Lantern software to it.  It isn't quite the same as CHDK and has different goals, but provides a way to write new software for Canon's DRYOS DSLR cameras.

Tempting. It sounds like first thing I need to do is try to get a firmware dump from the camera? Any online guides you recommend for accomplishing that?

Have you managed to force a dump out of the 500D yet?

Cheers

Hi, I'm new here!
I have a 500D, some computer skills (not a hardware hacker tho) and am willing to try dumping the firmware.

I tried the vers.req trick but I couldn't get a version number. Since it's a DSLR I can't start in playback mode, and the key combos don't seem to work. Is there some other way for a DSLR?

I can't use Card Tricks as I'm on Linux, but I've prepared an SD-card for booting. I found udumpfull.zip in this thread, I'm guessing this is the one to use?
Should I use newdryos.bin or dryos.bin?
What's the difference?

PS Is there any risk of permanently bricking the camera using the above? I guess there's always some risk, but assume it's not anywhere near e.g. flashing with a 3d party firmware...

PPS No joy using an empty (but otherwise prepped) SD-card. From other posts I figured it should at least avert the boot process to the card and halt, but maybe these newer models are smarter than that?

I'm not sure, but I don't think so, not right now anyway. The 500d has a different OS and uses a DIGIC IV.
I'm stuck at building a crosscompiler that works, but all I get is header errors...
I want to build som dummy images to find the .fir ID and hang the firmware update, see thread in "firmware dumping".

Hello, just want to ask something about future possibilities if firmware for 500d will be hacked :)

Both 5d mark ii and 500d use single digic 4 processor, and they are the same, right?

So, its just a software limitation that on 500d we have only 20 fps in 1080p mode? Or theese processors have same title, but, for example, clock rates differ?

OK, i suppose that is what was needed to start reverse engineering the firmware.

Now the T2i/550D is out that solves many of the shortcomings of the 500D. Is there still sufficient interest by disgruntled 500D owners (like myself) here in doing cracking this camera?

The 500D has been a very expensive camera and not everyone out there is rich so let's hope there is more than enough interest. My interest is very high, at the very least. Hopefully, as people learn of the possibilities that a hack of Canon's crappy update may mean, the interest will keep increasing.

Well I'm definitely keen for a firmware update to fix these video issues. I have a few friends who are also interested [all be it not as interested as me, as they pretty much don't use the video feature 99.9% of the time]. So yeah there is definitely a lot of interest out there for CHDK firmware updates. Hopefully before July, as I'd like to get some good quality video footage of the wedding from this camera.

Regards,
Troz
