With the SDM SD card inserted, whether I turn on in Record or Play, it starts in Play, green LED, even though the physical lever is pointing to Record. A second push of the lever to record again will enter Record & the red LED.

Not mine. If I press the lever to the left (CW), the camera always start in the record mode, and vice versa.

We have to consider if it is likely your camera does not behave the same as other cameras with the same firmware.
If so, is it due to the user or some other reason ?

I think I figure out the problem, so please hear me out.

In the "land down under" everything goes in a backward directions, i.e. water drains CCW. Therefore my theory is the code must be compilied backward to get it to work.

I really meant, can you confirm that normally the screen does not blank while running the MD script ?

Yes I am aware that something odd is happening with my camera & I do hope the operater is not behaving oddly, but I have tried to stay on track & follow your guidance, to the letter.

If you don't mind the cost to ship your camera to the US, I'd be more than happy to test it all out and make sure it is functioning properly. I would put it through it's paces and see if I experience the same issue you are seeing. This would give you a warm fuzzy as to the status of your camera.

Innocence is not one of my better traits :-))
Being a sailor, I was thinking of giving the camera a 'float test' next time the bus goes over a bridge !
I maybe able to arrange a 'which way it spins down the drain' first, though :-)
The thought of shipping the camera OS has crossed my mind as well, see how I go with that.
I can thank of other 'warm fuzzies' that grab my attention, particularly in the middle of winter here !

This business of putting ver.req as the name of a folder & it getting the camera's attention to give-up its true firmware number is odd to say the least, but it worked, but why !!!!!!!

Tonight I'm going to create an empty folder named ver.req and see what my camera does with that.

Sorry to say this Col, but your problem is so intriguing I am on 'pins and needles' wanting to figure it out maybe as much as you do. I have a feeling that when we figure it out we'll be looking back at the problem and wondering why we didn't think of that sooner.

What is really fasinating me right now (can't wait to get home from work), is the FOLDER named ver.req. I wish I had my camera here at work so I could test that right now.

I find that your problem appears to be unique in that I've never read of anyone, on any camera, on this forum ever having a problem getting the FILE ver.req to work. I understand that Canon built that functionality into the camera to identify the firmware version of the camera. I just cannot understand why your camera would behave any different? Does your camera have any strange markings on it, maybe it came from "The Twillight Zone"?

On a serious note, does your camera work properly without CHDK or SDM? Have you noticed anything strange or something mis-behaving on the camera itself. I guess I'm trying to rule out the possibility that the camera has hardware issues.
How long have you owned this camera, and how familiar are you with its features and functionality? Has it been dropped or bumped onto a hard surface. These cameras are pretty rugged but no electronic device like to be hit hard. My Son had a Sony Playstation 3 that was dropped 2 inches onto carpet, yes I said two inches, and never worked again.

One and one half years ago, I personally went through 4 Canon A590IS camera's before I returned it back to the store for a refund. Those camera's seemed to be very sensitive to having the lens bumped. Once the len got bumped it would get a "Lens Error" and would not go away. That's why I bought the A570IS's for my stereo setup.

One last thing for today (I am suppose to be working?).

If need be, I will, using my S5IS get SDM 1.84 working and fully tested, then pull the card and mail it to Col for testing.
I'll start with a fresh format and load the firmware and verify its functionality, and hope it runs on Col's camera.

The other alternative would be for Col to format, and load SDM 1.84, verify it is crashing then send me his card for further testing.

Well, I just tried it with the A590 and it does indeed work and shows the firmware version.

I tried it with my A720IS. It does work with a folder named ver.req.
I'm suprised.

I tried the folder named ver.req and it worked fine and ID's the firmware. But only the folder method works on your camera? Because it now seems apparent that the camera just needs to see something named ver.req to work. It really does not matter if its a file or a folder. More stranger than before?
