The answer to Q2 is definitely NO - the camera cannot be powered from the USB port (apart from anything else, the circuitry would not allow the necessary current to pass).

If you don't mind a messy, bulky solution you can buy a Canon CA-PS200 AC power adapter, a 12v to AC inverter and a 12v battery. That way you can run the camera for months.
