wait, i had this idea first Big Grin i can show you by sending you my personal chdk todo list. its in german though Big Grin
problem is, as soon as sd card is removed, so is chdk.
this could be "hardcoded" into chdk as in "on startup, check the _securemodecheckbox_, if set, read the _securemodemessage_ (from text file). display message until camera shut down OR special keypress.

There is the alternative way - to create a startup logo with such textual information and install it as boot image to the camera. In this case it will be shown every time on camera boot and will not depend on CHDK existence.
Or, even glue a sticker with the address to return. Smiley

All these things could help in case you lost the camera. But they are absolutely nothing if the camera is stolen.

coincidentally, for the first time in 7 years, I almost lost a cheap mobile phone  yesterday in a postal office.  Angry
luckily, the worker there was a fair person and she gave it to me.
I keep a software running on my smartphone though that allows me to remotely lock it up by sms and display a message on it like "located by GPS call 0123456".
I guess that changing the logo screen with your contact information would be nice, and in CHDK maybe even have it do something when you start it up that would make a thief discard of it to maybe be found by a fair person. not everybody would know that the software is just loaded on the card.
on bootup it could like simulate a malfunction or it could require some sort of login procedure to work properly (like a key press sequence).
anything that would better the chances of getting the camera back would be useful

I am confused! Huh?

I see two different ideas:

1.- Lost Camera: To somehow include your personal details in the camera so an honourable person can return it to you. But at the same time hide them to a burglar so he can't know where you live and can't attempt to mug you again?

2.- Stolen Camera: To introduce some kind of password so a burglar can't operate the camera making it worthless.

Compromises:
While my phone number in the camera increases the chances to get it back if found by a honest person. I'd hate my details been available to the burglar. (May be I'm too paranoid).

The password would give the robber a nice surprise, but I'd have to enter it every time I turn on the camera. (My be I'm too lazy).

so am I .... What's the point of this ?

ex.: burglar -> sees password -> <swears> -> formats card -> smiles ...
or:  burglar -> sees password -> smiles knowingly (aha CHDK compat. cam -> more $$$)

might be useful for honest finder @price of privacy loss

Sure, you can look at it any way you want. I work the F1 races at Indy. Last summer I lost my phone. Someone found it. Made a call to my mother. I still don't have my phone. I guess the phone call to my mother made it in his mind he tried to return my phone and he kept it, gave it to someone else, or sold it. The main office at the speedway never saw it, but hey it was only a 500 dollar phone.

I also work attorneys everyday. Some of them would rather take coffee then help pay for it. (supported by co-workers not the company)

There is different levels of stealing

5. You're on vacation and accidentally left your camera on the cafe' table. Maybe the next family that sits down ponders their great new find. Until they start it up and see that message. They rethink keeping it and return it.

Oh sure, you might have had the idea first (unpublished!! I can fudge file-creation/modified dates too to prove mine was earlier Smiley ) for CHDK, but I get the one for hardcoding it into the firmware of all cameras. Bill Gates eat your heart out. Not one camera will be sold without going through my patent first, in the future. Smiley The insurance companies can buy this idea for $5billion, with all the insurance claims they will save on. Smiley

(I'll make a deal with you, whoever gets rich first has to share half with the other Smiley )

(Wikia history track: was it before this?  2008-03-03T12:20:06 (Talk | contribs) m (35,551 bytes) (?-- Authorized-Use Only - typo) )

in my todo i have
Quote
individiuelle begrüssung, antitheft und so
that can roughly be translated to "user-editable salutation, antitheft and the like".
by salutation i mean anything, from "good morning" (depending on clock obviously) to a textfile (perhaps with the owner information) or even, and that was my initial idea - from a small database (will be a textfile formatted in a special way). now here's the deal: this database can be filled to the brim with tips & tricks regarding chdk, photography or other things. and everytime you startup the cam you will be presented one random entry (its like when i log into my linux box remotely, as per default there is a program running called fortune (as in fortune-cookie) that automatically "salutes" me with a quote of the day). in many programs (in MS windows) you have the "display tip of the day at startup" option, which is unnerving at times, but sure as hell might be handy for newbies. this can be used for multiple purposes, heres another example: a chdk-photo-contest! the admin of the contest creates this special database file, maybe even encrypted, filling it with the goals of the contest and a set of rules (start of contest eg). you get the file, load it onto the sd card, and as soon as you start the cam (and according to ruleset) you will be presented the goals. e.g: get out of the house and shoot a bird. the contest idea i have in mind for several months now, originally planned as in encrypted scripts. if well written you can have things like "take one shot of a person you like. mind you, only ONE shot" - then the next goal pops up. and by creating checksums you can verify a person hasnt cheated at the end of the day.

There is the alternative way - to create a startup logo with such textual information and install it as boot image to the camera. In this case it will be shown every time on camera boot and will not depend on CHDK existence.
Or, even glue a sticker with the address to return. Smiley

All these things could help in case you lost the camera. But they are absolutely nothing if the camera is stolen.

well, the startup logo is shown what, 1 second? thought about that, but that really is a too short timeframe for anyone to read stuff. speaking of a logo, gotta load that chdk logo in my cam finally.

bottom line: as soon as onscreen keyboard is included we can introduce pincodes or passwords to startup chdk (I'm also waiting for the encryption module). for now the gridfile method is excellent. and we'll see what else there will be, ranging from custom salutations to anti-theft to tip-of-the-day.

this idea just came in: when you start the cam and hold a specific key or a set of key, it will start normally. however when you forget to do that, you will be presented the "cam stolen" display or grid.

wow long post, how barney-esque Big Grin
