So it seems that  CHDK does not allow to exceed the programmed bit rate (close to 25 Mb/s) . . .
It's a pity.
In other words, Canon set their limit based on hardware limits, not some arbitrary restriction. This is a good thing ;)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

First, I very much appreciate the effort and hard work they are doing to improve the characteristics of the SX20.
I have a SX20 (1.02b) with CHDK.
I boot the machine and it immediately turns off, the second attempt to start (happens randomly), I see that the ambient temperature is not the problem, use a FAT16 partition (boot) and 1 fat32 partition work in a Kingston 8GB Class 4.
Make format and partition reset does not solve the problem. In previous firmware versions (SX20-102b-0.9.9-000-full.zip) works well, (I prefer to use a single partition of work).
Hope this helps for them to solve the problem.
Anyway, CHDK works very well on this camera and I thank you for all the effort and time devoted to this firmware, is fantastic.
At another point to leave some photos to share with you.

@NEZtron & @bdasmith
I thought I might try testing this on a couple of my 8G cards, but I need some info on how each of you setup your cards:
- actual partition sizes
- which utilities/apps you used for the CHDK set up
- your SX20 FW version
- the build version you are using
- the brand of SD cards you used
- how you installed CHDK on the boot partitions (manually copied, auto, etc.)

If I can replicate the problem with the current build I'm using, then I'll test using with one of the older CHDK builds I saved.

Hi SkyWalker9 and Thanks, I happened to remark:

-Camera Canon SX20 IS Firmware 1.02B
-"Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 4
- Firmware SX20-102b-1023-0.9.9-full "Tue Jan 04 7:43:00 GMT 2011, build 0.9.9, revision 1023
- Use "sdminste.exe"to create partitions and set boot area with CardTricks144 in Fat 16 partition
- 2.0MB boot partition Fat16 and 7.4gb FAT32 partition work.
"In boot partition" diskboot.bin & ver.req " written manually
"In working partition" CHDK " written manually in the same root as the camera"DCIM ".
step-to simplify the configuration and service in the file "cchdk.cfg.tar.gz" in "http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AQUL2QBQ"
If there is anything else I can give me comment.

I have a SX20 (1.02b) with CHDK...I boot the machine and it immediately turns off, the second attempt to start (happens randomly)...In previous firmware versions (SX20-102b-0.9.9-000-full.zip) works well...
@NEZtron
I tested using the following builds:
- sx20-102b-0.9.9-1023 (same version as yours)
- sx20-102b-1.1.0-DE-full_rev_390
- sx20-102b-1.1.0-full_rev_538

For each of the builds I tested using three different "CCHDK.CFG" files (the one in the installation, the one you provided, and my own); I ran the same tests on a SanDisk & a PNY 8G class 4 cards; I partitioned each of the cards using "sdminste.exe" to create & format both partitions and to make the smaller partition bootable. After all of that, I still was not able to duplicate the problem mentioned, so I'm not sure what is causing the problem. I once had a set of rechargeable batteries I was using that went bad that caused something similar, but that is probably not the problem in this case.

I noticed that you are using build sx20-102b-0.9.9-1023 from the "Autobuild Download" CHDK home page. I'd recommend avoiding the "Autobuild Download" because the builds are not necessarily stable yet..."An "Autobuild" version is a version of CHDK that is still under development...As with most beta software, not all new features have been fully tested..."

You might try using the latest "stable" SX20 build from the WIKI home page under "Supported Cameras". Following the links you will eventually get to the download page: http://forum.chdk-treff.de/autobuild.php
- Select "Powershot SX Series", "SX20", then your version "102b"
- Select "download"

Note: Before installing a new CHDK version, copy your last "CCHDK.CFG" and "badpixel.bin" files and the "SCRIPTS" folder to your PC. After installing the newer version you can then copy the "CCHDK.CFG" and "badpixel.bin" files and the "SCRIPTS" folder to the new versions' CHDK folder.

Good luck!

After a recent trip to Tennessee, I decided to try the Ricoh CA-1 cable switch with the SX20 CHDK. I had read the information on the SDM web page http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/ca1.htm and I read that someone had successfully used on the SX10 (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=294.msg31767#msg31767 ), so I ordered one from Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/IRCCA1.html?sid=20090407212745594zb&searchinfo=Ricoh+CA-1 ) and tested with my SX20 (FW 1.02b). So far it has worked great - found no problems when using with the SX20 FW 1.02b CHDK.

The accessory's accompanying phamplet indicates that you should expect about 8,000 photos using an aklaline battery and about 3,000 using a manganese battery. The phamplet doesn't mention using a lithium battery or a rechargeable battery. The unit uses one AAA battery that steps up the voltage to trigger a proper response for the SX20 using CHDK. With the "On/Off" switch the battery should last a long time. While the basic device is made of black plastic instead of a stronger metal casing, I found that it is very light weight - and the battery is very easy to change because of it's slip off cover. Hope this helps others that might have been wondering if this unit will work with the SX20.

//Hi SkyWalker9

Thanks for giving your time to do the tests!.
I took all your recommendations and did this test:

Download "http://forum.chdk-treff.de/autobuild.php"

SX20-102b-1.1.0-full_rev_540.zip          -    Problem
SX20-102b-1.1.0-full_rev_516.zip          -    Problem
SX20-102b-1.1.0-full_rev_503.zip          -    Problem
SX20-102b-1.1.0-DE-full_rev_479.zip    -    Problem   :(
SX20-102b-1.1.0-DE-full_rev_453.zip    -    ok
SX20-102b-1.1.0-DE-full_rev_449.zip    -    ok
SX20-102b-1.1.0-DE-full_rev_382.zip    -    ok
down previous  ---> ok

The version "rev_479" is the biggest problem. In the following versions but the problem still is more stable.
"Possibly the electronics of my camera is more sensitive to CHDK?.
"I agree a battery problem, I use NI-MH 2100 mAh "Fulltotal". Would have to prove "I" on startup.

Anyway, something happened between rev_453 and rev_479 "DE" unfortunately are the only versions that I have to compare.

I'm very happy with CHDK I hope it's a new track.
I see that "bdasmith" reports the same problem, sure some are and I think we will repair.

Nestor,  thanks for taking the time to test all those builds with your Camera.  I just haven't had the time yet, should beable to on the weekend....i will check with the same ones you listed to see if i get the same problem/resolution with those builds.    Don't think it is batteries for me, as it is working fine on a 4gb fat16 partition, and boots right quick every time.  its only with the small boot part and large storage part - maybe my cam doesn't like fat32?? don't know.

i hope we can resolve this soon too  :)

Hi all,

I have been playing around with the md_demo1.bas script from sx20-102b-0.9.9-959-full.zip and I have never been able to get the camera to trigger properly.  If I move my hands in front of the camera, the boxes on the LCD trigger right away, but the camera doesn't fire for like 20 seconds.

Has anyone been able to get this to work on the sx20?  I upgraded to the current sx20-102b-0.9.9-1030-full build. but no dice.

I'm hoping to use it as a motion trigger for an SLR and strobe setup firing over a PocketWizard radio, but it would need to be pretty quick (like shooting in the 1/200 range).  Am I dreaming or this really possible?

Thanks very much for your help!
