What kinda focus did you use, joec ?
My robin is MF at around 50cm, I will try 30cm on the next sunny day, with my other cam 70cm maybe. And damned 1/1250s can't freeze a flying bird that close. :/

Here is a male house sparrow (not an action shot). it was shot with a macro setting - as was the female house sparrow.
i have been using auto focus ( the prefocus setting). usually use an iso200. camera is A540 on a tripod.

I found that this birdbath could serve as a very good backdrop. It attracts lots of birds and its diameter is entirely within the macro focus range of the A540. I may dump a bucket of water in it on a sunny winter day to see what i get. I am really enjoying this motion dtect thingie. A couple goldfinches from earlier this year:

Imo you should put your cam at the same level as the foutain's border, and focus on just one small part, let your luck play, and get closer views.

yvesson -- do you find any settings work especially well with MF focus? And do you ever get an error message ( or at least it looks like one) SD:#;Factor 0 in red at the top of the screen? I have been getting this when i try to us MF .

No, all I change when I set MF is fast/slow mode. Slow mode with AF and fast mode with MF.
Never had any error message.

This is not an error message; it's the CHDK OSD, showing the SD (subject distance) override value...

The script setting are kinda the default ones, I just change to : "chroma channel", "slow mode", "3s burst" and between 20 and 30 threshold.
My cam is in Av mode always, so I just get the fastest speed for the available light.

I'm just starting to try out Motion Detection with very little success so far

why do you choose chroma channel and which chroma channel are you using ?

I have just been using the default luminance setting but it very rarely triggers despite the fact I can see movement on the LCD screen

I'm trying to take pictures of sea birds coming up past cliff tops very unsuccessfully 🙁

Just use 0 chroma and not 1 luminance. I use luminance only for lightnings.

yvesson, how many rows/cells do you set? Default 6x4?
How do you eliminate triggering on trees movement in background? Just by adjusting/decreasing threshold? Do you use masking?
