Perhaps it would be possible to include a script to disable battery compatibility checks or set them however the user likes. Does chdk support the idea of a script executed at startup like a users profile?

You can have a script autostart when the camera powers up. But you can only have one currently "active" script, so that limits your ability to run other scripts.

Regardless, this would still put CHDK in the position of defeating something Canon has every right to put into their cameras. For the first time ever.

Very much not a good idea. Moves CHDK from a possible "fair use" position to something much, much more risky.

If it goes down this route, I'm completely out of here!

I checked in the non-battery parts of the patch posted earlier, trunk r4745.

I'm not inclined to add any code to specifically defeat the battery check.

I doubt that CHDK will have time to run the script before battery menu appears.
At this moment menu-disabling code is executed before the moment when camera initializes controllers and starts GUI.
On M3 battery menu appears only one time after battery cover was closed. How it works on your cameras?

I own nine different Powershots - six of which use Canon proprietary batteries (i.e. not standard AA cells). I have one genuine Canon battery for each and many low cost 3rd party batteries as well.

All the Canon batteries still function properly, although the oldest have somewhat diminished capacity of course. Of the 3rd party batteries (i have several per camera and many different "brands") more than half have swollen up enough that they don't fit into their camera very well, and about 20% will no longer charge.

In this case battery icon is not displayed and battery temperature is not measured
But in future I'm expecting new DC couplers with a chip. This corresponds to chosen marketing policy.

Is the handling from DC couplers and non-Canon batteries different?
When yes => how the cam knows, that is a DC coupler?
When no => why it is so difficult to build non-Canon batteries?

I was not right regarding using the script. It works well at startup.

CHDK M3 was updated from official SVN r4745
build r32 for fw v1.0.1 can be found in attachment.

My guess is the Lp17 style DC couplers for the M3, M5 and the M10 is that also possibly contain a microprocessor.
Also Canons EF to EF-M adapter could also possibly contain a microprocessor.

As you have pointed out (and I have posted about before) the DC couplers, for P&S Cameras only have
two ferrite beads and no other active electronic components.

or just for a service repair this (recorded) data is then available to canon who
may then have a valid reason to NOT do a free warranty repair, or to then void
free service repairs.

Edit #1 Just to be Clear this post is just about the battery related strings.

And Also any Non-Canon Hardware such as Ef Compatible Canon Lenses.

Note #1:- The M3 also has made provision for operating the M3 without a Lens
i.e. For, Legacy Lenses, Legacy bellows, Microscopes, Pin-Hole Lens, etc.

Note #2:- My M3 works OK with my collection of Legacy Lenses and even with
a Nikon Legacy Lens attached to the M3 via a Speed-Booster.

I think you both missed the point about what reyalp posted? Those are not "strings" - they are regular ARM instructions whose binary representation just happens to also correspond to the ASCII codes for "CHDK". You can put your tin foil hats away on this one.

I'm pretty sure Ant was referring to the battery related strings, also recorded in the xml posted earlier.

Rather the reason is Canon's acquisitiveness, because M3 uses only two contacts of battery connector with DC coupler. 😀

EOS M3 have an electronic level and "task_Accelerometer".

I just have a question about the possibility of getting CHDK running on the M5? Kinda only wondering about the possibility for improving the video quality?

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place just thought the M3 and M5 are kind of similar, I know the M5 has a different possessor (Digi7 vs Digi6)

Sigh.

In the very competitive world of P&S cameras, it's safe to assume that if Canon could get better video quality on any of their products they would do so. Thus it's hugely unlikely that an unsupported hack (CHDK) is going to somehow magically do so. Once the hardware is pushed to its limit, nothing is going to change that.

Sorry. Just don't hold you breath waiting.
