News for firmware for canon 40D??

Hy.

One idea wold be to autoset to custom white balance once you selected the custom whitebalace photo. Other is not to ask for confirmation when selecting the photo or at least to be set to ok instead of cancel so you can push the set button twice to select the photo.

Could be a good idea to add a menu option that takes you automatically to the white balance photo selection when you select the custom white balance (somewhat the reverse of the other idea). Or to ask when select custom whitebalance if you want to select a new photo or keep current.

Another idea is to be able to change the whitebalance preset's tmperature. As I've seen the tungsten preset is way off. Nice to be able to change the K value of the preset.

Instead of a 10 sec autoshutter would be better a custom time shutter.

Could it be possible to make the big brother's option that allows to set some fine-tuning over lenses?
Like I've seen on my lens: it is a bit out of focus. This option would allow to change to a +- focus from the camera AF system result. This option should memorise the settings for more lenses and automatically adjust whenever a particular lens is used.

This should work on any of the Canon DIGIC III (or IV) DSLRs. This means the 40D, the 50D, the 450D, the 1000D, and the 5DMkII.
It will not work on the 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D, 300D, 350D, and 400D. It's not that I have anything against the owners of those cameras, but simply that the Canon SDK does not support retrieving the shutter count for them.

Yeah, maybe even a lot more than 'a while'. I really have a lot of stuff to do and I have very little time for CHDK-ish stuff. In fact, I haven't really touched any of it in the last month or so. I really can't tell when I'm able to work on this again but it could be months... maybe never, because I'm not really sure about the legality of this (won't work without Canon encryption).

I understand your worries wrt legality :'(. The same applied when developing the "improved" firmware for the 300D, but there where no actions taken by Canon. They are probably to busy developing new camera's and the minority that use non-canon firmware is minimal an would not damage mich (if any).

If you don't have the time to develope yourself, at least spread your knowledge so that other (with time) can take over from where you left. I really would like to know how the decrypt the payload in the FW and to see if modification of the existing FW is possible.

So keep up the good work and spread your knowledge 😀

if successful, then new whole world to dSLR is possible 😁 including movies of course, better than what Canon can give us for sure, like multiple frame rates, etc etc .. it is all about the software right ...

if you have seen hd-video of 5d mk2 or sx 1IS( sx110 IS)-they have indentical chip- you will forget all these hacks here. ok, the affordable sx 1 IS has 28mm zoom only. if you can wait we will see HD-version of panasonic lumix g1 = G2. 7-14mm lens, 20/1.7 wow (multiply by 2x) 14-28, 40/1.7 isnt this impressive?

I fully agree with EmKlap and encourage you to share your knowledge.
EmKlap and me have been working on the 300D UnDutchables edition and we never faced any action from Canon. You can just share general knowledge, e.g. in source form, without distributing the actual binaries or fir files. In the end, someone else might do this based on your work.
But collaboration is the power of open source.

If your work is not based on chdk but rather on modified fir files, the collaboration might be hosted on the same forum where we continued the 300D work started by Wasia, same kind of situation. If it is based on chdk, it better stay here.

I did not see micro adjustment strings in the 400D code, nor 20D and 300D.
I assume it is a novel feature, maybe the 50D can help here and if we are lucky, the 40D has some preparation already.
I guess this code is developed on a certain source base and at release time, marketing decides which of the available features make it into this years product and which need to wait.

what's the meaning just adjusting focus after focus lock.

could be probability tune up lens like the 50D , i mean for each lens to avoid problem of back or front focus?

it could be a nice feature change the info color , the black & white could be changed with other hue

if you ask me, microadjustment takes too much time for practicality's sake. for me, this is useful for macros, still life, and other similar subjects - subjects that don't move and you are in a situation wherein there is no time pressure. when you are doing, say, weddings or events, this is useless. it would be better to use a stop or two narrower of an aperture to compensate - which always helps keep your images sharp.

Great photography tip, and thank you, but I'd still like to have more features/options available to me where possible. Don't get me wrong, I love my 40D as-is, but more/better features for free isn't a bad thing, right? 😉

the best thing i guess it's the micro -adjustment
becasue the 40D is a good camera but suffers of Back focus

hi there,

I had an Idea an if it would be able to include this in the 40D that would be really helpfull. The 40D has a safty shift function which allows the camera to adapt to rapid light changes and it changes the shutter speed or aperture by itself to match the enviromental conditions. The problem is that you can't set a limit, so the camera goes down to a second or less if necessary. Is it possible to write a feature which alows to set a limit (as the 1d Mark III is able to do) and so keep the kamera from going to a shutter speed that can't be handheld.

There is also the same function for changing the ISO by itself in a certain range, the 40D doesn't have that included (but the 1d mk III), so that would be really cool too.

I hope it's understandable what I'm suggesting... ;o)
