Just tried on a 1.01b camera -- having problems with the RAW files. Gimp tried with both dcraw and ufraw plugins gives me problems, whether used as plugins or command-line tools (Linux: Ubuntu Hardy Heron, BTW)

ufraw reports: unsupported file format
dcraw reports: Cannot decode file (filename)

I'm using the default RAW options from the a590is-101b-0.6.2-full version, which I believe is the latest.

I can upload a sample RAW if someone else would like to have a go at it;

UPDATE: Hardy Heron comes with dcraw 8.80, which is too old to process the RAW files from this camera.

I downloaded dcraw 8.88 (from the dcraw homepage: Decoding raw digital photos in Linux) and built it, and it's working fine! WOOHOO!

Trying out 0.6.2 on my 101b A590is .. everything I've tried so far appears to be working. dcraw 8.88 can handle the .CRW raw images as 5MeoCMP has stated above .. I'm experiencing an odd behaviour, though..

I currently lack a card reader at home, so I'm plugging the camera directly in via USB. I realise this in itself may be causing the oddity [and honestly, WHY did Canon omit a plain USB storage device mode!?]. What happens is .. plugging the camera in [in 'play' mode] usually shows only the JPEG images stored on the card. Successive power on/off and plug/unplugs will get it to show some or all of the RAW images as well. It appears to be random as to what it's going to let you see.

I know I can avoid this altogether by using a card reader, I'm just curious to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

Kudos to all involved in this project, and THANK YOU, thank you thank you for helping turn my $135CAD bargain camera into a raw-capable unit!

Maybe I have some settings wrong, but I am having no luck with bracketing. The first shot seems to hang the camera. I don't know if this has to do with the image checking that occurs with normal 590IS use when holding the shutter button, but I am only able to shoot one image when I try to bracket.

Its disabled for the moment. Someone should report if this camera has iris diaphragm and/or ND Filter..

i'm not sure if this actually means A590 has an iris diapfagm, but searching the trings in the 100e dump i found this:

Hi, I am not sure, but I guess the 590is has a diaphragm, because it offers a relatively wide range of apperture values from f2.6 to f8.0. This is one of the reasons why I bought this camera.

Edit: This is just a wild guess, how can we check?

Edit2: I just had a close look at the lens at longest focal lenth while changing the light conditions. It looks like an iris diaphragm with 6 blades. Cool!

Yes, normally you should see the iris, e.g. with using a strong pocket lamp...
...a ND filter is only swinging in or out, you can hear it clicking & you'll see only one rapid change when looking to the lens...

unfortunately i cannot format my 4 gb card using fat 16, the camera doesnt give me this option, and when i try to format it with the computer (windows xp) via usb card reader it only gives me the option fat 32 (no fat 16 available).
can someone help, please?

Compared the Canon manual focus indicator with the DOF Calculator values. In the macro range it seems to be 5 cm off (Canon: 10 cm/ CHDK: 15 cm, Canon 5 cm/ CHDK: 10 cm).

Edit:
This is no surprise as the a720 focusses at 10 cm minimum.

not sure, but try playing with the setting in:

Main Menu -> OSD Parameters -> DOF Calculator -> Subject Distance from lens

if activated, this makes (all ?) subject distances in CHDK
relative to front of lens instead of sensor (or backplane, not sure)

about the iris/nd filter.

I was also trying to hear a "click" for the Nd filter swinging in or out. well, there was none! 😛
But at the same time, if you shoot the same picture with both filter settings, you obtain two different results.

anyway, im on a train right now 😀 this evening ill post another build with filter disabled / iris enabled (and hopefully, the sources)

edit: and no theres so SDHC support at the moment...

Changing the settings there did not make much of a difference. Is the distance read from DryOS or calculated seperately?

These are just minor issues, I am quite happy with the port.

I will do some more checking and post what I found. There is also some little thing with the zoom factor values.

As far as I can see, aperture and ISO values are ok.
