Okay, people, now that CHDK works very well in SX1 (for the most part, and all essential features), I just thought to inform you, that at this point I am no longer actively hunting for the remaining issues (FW upgrade starting method, edge and zebra overlay).

I can still help with it though, if somebody comes up with good new suggestions.

Big thanks once more to fboesch for doing the most hard work of porting for our fantastic camera!

I'll be following this thread (and wikia) whenever I can 😀

EDIT: Agh, this post sounds more "final" than I meant. I mostly just wanted people to have no big expectations about me repairing the remaining issues. I'm not "quitting" on anything or going away 😀

I've found one very annoying thing. If I take picture in native RAW format and with overridden ISO value slower than 80, I can see normal colorful picture on the camera, also thumbnail extracted from RAW is in color, but Canon DPP shows all 3 RGB channels equal in the RAW. In other words, DPP shows monochrome picture. ISO value writen to EXIF looks like XX(auto), i.e. 16(auto).

Since DPP is only software that works well with SX1 RAW format by now, I don't see any way to develop such pictures.

I guess that the problem is new for CHDK developers, because only few compact cams have native RAW support.

Ok, had yesterday evening a closer look on the closing menue issue and I think I found the reason. The "AF Frame" Setting of my cam was on "face detect" and every time the saw an face (sometime the cam only was the opinion to see one 😉 the menue closed. I changed the AF Frame to "Center" and then the menue stayed open. If necessary I can have a closer

This is a good finding! 😀 ...and yes: I think you are right in your assumption.

I think we have to use it as follows in the future:

A) Use the Cam Default RAW Pictures (without tough CHDK Overriding) -> DPP will work fine
B) Use the Cam CHDK RAW Pictures (RAW/DNG) and develop with thirdparty tools (e.g. DNG4PS2)

Potentially:

C) Further development that CHDK will hook into Processing of Pictures and correct the choosen values to the EXIF information (this is right now not done by CHDK but left to the CAM which at some limits just show the Max (1/3200 for anything higher than 1/3200 or F11 for anything higher than F11) 😀 --> would be beneficial to any CHDK Build/Cam

Or

D) One of the "true" Developers here, will understand the "RAW" Part of the Code on the SX1 and find some additional Routines to call within CHDK...

P.S. I wonder how G9/G10 Owners are dealing with it...i thought that these models also have "native RAW" support available...

Excellent! Yes, this is (on a quick check) also on my SX1 the case! --> in some "Modes" the setting is not on FaceDetect, so no "online refresh" is needed and the CHDK Menu stay ok....

Pev69: Thank you for the "info" and your support and time these days! - I understand you completely, because next "level" will be to really understand the ASM Code of our Cam's...

I'm also needed to reduce my timely inset a little bit (Easter Holidays are over)...but still have the whish of finding the PS.FI2 issue....then I think I did my part too... To do this: I'm now using the LED Blink method to track down the code, when is what happening...needs a lot of time (compile, install, run - different PowerOn scenarios, - think, note down results, change location of code, recompile....etc etc..)

Anyway: As we've seen: It is an (working) Alpha now, and as we prooved, that it may run ok from larger cards (just with diskboot.bin) I will release to the Guru's the "DIFF" to the 730 Build later today, so that it may be added to the official Trunk/Autobuild

DNG4PS2 doesn't support DNG produced by SX1, but ufraw does. Looks like this is the only way. 🙁

The most anoying thing with the Canon native raw support was for me that you can't use it for long time exposures. But with chdk you also can make long time exposures in other modes than SCN and there's then the native raw supported.
Ok, there are many features more you have using CHDK Raws, but without a tool to read and modify the files it is useless.

Since there's so much talk about RAW here recently, and I haven't bothered to use it (at least yet), I'd like to ask you who use it: is it much advantageous compared to normal (JPEG) pictures? I mean that does using RAW really bring something that is seemingly different/better with a camera like the SX1 (by the eyes of a regular streetwalker 😀)?

I'm not trying to belittle it or anything, and since this is somewhat off topic, just a short answer (or a link to a good explanation elsewhere) is fine for me 😀

Very generally, RAW is _all_ the information captured by taking picture, and JPG is part of this information just rendered to 2D RGB matrix. If the rendering process is done internally in cam, you can't restore all the data back. I.e. some two or more sensors captured different values, but in renderer decided that two produced pixels will have equal values, all further image processing will perceive the two pixels as equal.
Thus processing RAW manually may give more intellegent rendering and more naturalistic/artificial image as result.

2 ) can I change shooter, exposure, etc ????? ---> Answer is YES for Pictures, NO in Video
3) bitrate ????? ---> Answer is YES (through different compression --> processed bandwidth)

Additional info:

1) CHDK does modify the "compressing" stuff of the "Video-Feature" (it is not just in this SX1 release, but generally CHDK)...Resolution is still based on the Cam's native feature.
2) As said: Just parameter of Compression on Video Settings...no other "video related parameter" (--> Remember: We are still talking about Digi-Cam's and not Video-Cam's, eventough worlds are coming together 😀
3) --> "Yes"...With setting Default (84) it is about 5MByte/sec with Setting to (1) i came to 400-500kbits/s for a 1920x1080 FullHD Video. But compression artefacts (Squares) are really visible. With Setting (10) I got about 800kbits/sec which is - for me- fine in terms of "artefacts)...

Recommendation: Go to chdk.wikia.com and read the WIKI of the CHDK Feature (in General). This thread is just about "port" the existing CHDK build to the SX1 IS Cam. No specific "features"/extensions are planned. We are working here onto "fixing" some issues, that all features (of the original CHDK) are working.

It'll be interesting whether the speed on the CMOS cam differs from the 4-5 pps of the CCD ones (e.g. SX10)...

Edit: Played around (without waiting for specifications) and actually shooting is definately faster than the "default" 4 PPS.... I did now shoot 4-5 always with 5sec in a row and got between 34 - 38 Pictures (within these 5 sec)....so I would say that PPS is on average 7pics/sec...

7pps - cool, that's what i wanted to know...
You can set a low value for ISO override, e.g. ISO80; the images should be significant better, but effective (visible) ISO may be somewhere around 200-300...here you'll find my little test with the SX10.

On request of phyrephox two days ago, I hereby provide you a "DIFF" for the additional SX1 Part.

It is a DIFF (showing the additions/changes to files) based on trunk730 (original) and trunk730 (with required mods to support SX1).

Modification needs to be done (see DIFF) in

\MakeFile
\include\camera.h
\core\gui.c
\core\kbd.c

Additionally in the ZIP file the ADDED files of folders \loader\sx1\.. and \platform\sx1\... are included.

Not Included: fi2.inc (keys/IV) and changes to fi2enc.c (suggested by ewvar earlier to show "Firmware 2.1.0.0" when Updating....will be added if PS.FI2 Boot will work)

Good! Then I got the point right 😀 I used a "high ISO" Value....(actually 2300 so that effective also 3200 are taken)....will try it with "low ISO" then! 😀

Hi to all "Users"/Testers of CHDK for the SX1

After making a Diff (so that in the future CHDK is available through the AutoBuild Server (hence: still as Alpha)) I've realized, that there is a more recent "trunk" already there (with some "Long exposure" fixes)....

So I've "ported" manually the SX1 extensions to the new Trunk735 and recompiled them so that our CHDK will also show Build 0.9.8...

New Users: Please Read instructions in Posts above....It is an Alpha, but functionally working.

(Remarks: PS.FI2 file still not working / 2x Blink of the AF LED when starting CHDK --> due to "debugging" version status / Older Versions from previous posts have been removed)

Since the Autobuild Server always compile with OPT_FI2, this should be disabled in this port for now...
