350d boot from cf card

Hi. I'm trying to find out how timelapse is working as well.
left/right: increase and decrease seconds
menu/info: double and half number of pictures
play: increase number of pictures by one

but how to start? nothing happens, when i press or doublepress "set".
i'm using "350D-20100821.zip" from crazyclaus.
anyone got this to work? seems like others have the same problem with pressing "set"

well, it should be set. I don't know why it doesn't work for some of you. I will make a user setting to change SET and PLAY buttons.

I have had some trouble and didn't have much time for coding, but I will upload a new version with some of the features I mentioned in my last post later.

have any of you with SET button related problems tried to use the options for making your own autofocus point sets? I suppose the SET button doesn't work there as well?

new features:

when a timelapse starts, review time is set to HOLD and LCD brightness to minimum automatically
when a timelapse ends, they are set back to the former values and the camera gives the shortcut signal eg beep

you can set the review time to ANY value you like

you can set the camera auto power off time to ANY value you like

Flash exposure compensation is now available from -6 to +6 in the INFO menu (without hack available: +-2)

there is an option in the user settings that has the camera set the flash exposure compensation to 0 when turning on (if you like)

and there is an option that switches the SET and PLAY buttons in the INFO menu for those of you where SET doesn't work

I recommend you to download gcc346.zip and BUILD YOUR OWN VERSION
there are now 21 possible menu options and I'm sure most people will find some of them superfluous. and I'm even more sure that you want to have your most used options loacted at the beginning of the menu!

If your camera is not yet "hacked", here'S how to do it:
1. and most important: DON'T TRY TO HACK YOUR CAMERA IF IT'S NOT FIRMWARE VERSION 1.0.3

2. EXACTLY follow the steps on this page: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/350D

3. but instead of step 6 on the page, copy the autoexec.bin from one of the .zip files above, the files linked to in the CHDK wiki are old and don't have all functions.

read the last pages of this thread to find the detailed instructions for using the hack (especially the shortcuts)

you're right. setting autofocus points worked nether with the SET button.
but with PLAY button in your new version it does. as well as starting timelapse. very good.
too pitty, that you didn't upload the german version with PLAY as well 😉

the SET button should activate the function (or the play button in the other version). on my camera the first photo is taken right after I press the button (sometimes needs to be pressed twice, though)

unzip, put the directory with the newest version (from the .zip in my post above) into gcc346\myproject\.

load user_settings.txt into an editor. remove // in front of the line with "DEUTSCH" and put // in front of the line with "ENGLISH"

run build.bat

that's it, you've built a new autoexec.bin with your settings. shouldn't be hard to do unless you are on a dialup connection to the internet (gcc346.zip is about 40MB)

fixed the bug that you have to press the MENU INFO PLAY and SET buttons twice in the INFO menu, will upload code later

feels much better to use the menu options this way!

the autoexec.bin in the .zip is an english version with set button used in the menu.
please build your own version using the source code contained in the .zip

Placed unzipped new autoexec.bin file on CF card. Selected a time lapse setting, pressed set many times.

Time Lapse does not activate??? Pretty much tried everything, what step am I missing???

Tried "contains autoexec.bin with english menu, beep confirmation, using PLAY button instead of SET" and all appears OK now.

Could not download the other file as it was marked private.

tried again, everything works ok for me with the autoexec.bin from the new .zip.
I marked the old file private to force people download the new one.
there should be no difference in the behaviour of the time-lapse function, it's the same code.

is this the first autoexec.bin you try or did you have other ones on your camera that worked with SET button starting Time-Lapse?

I know now why SET doesn't work for some people. It depends on your setting in the custom functions what SET should do. (custom function 1)
on setting 0: Normal it does nothing, ALSO IN THE INFO MENU
on settings 1, 2 and 3 it works
on setting 4: AF frame select it selects AF frames, ALSO IN THE INFO MENU

If you have setting 0, I recommend changing to 1,2 or 3.
If you have setting 4 I suppose you want to keep the AF frame selection on this button, so build yourself an autoexec.bin that uses PLAY button instead. downside: the function that is usually on the PLAY button won't be available (increase number of pictures taken by time-lapse by one)
I will set this function to another button soon so you can use settings 0 and 4 and still have the full functionality of the hack.

Nice catch! Thanks for all your time with this! That must be it as the PLAY button to activate works fine. I did try a file using the SET button.

I will check the set button setting when I get home from work.

I figured i will help the community by writing the missing part of the documentation/feature set explanation.

"1:ISO" = Change the ISO value from 100 to 3200

"2:WB" = Change the White Balance (all the original plus ColorTemp)

"3:CTemp" = If chosen ColorTemp on the n.º 2 function, choose here the color temperature in º Kelvin

"4:Metering" = Change the meetering type (all the original plus Spot)

"5:AEB" = Activate and choose value for Auto Exposure Bracketing, until +-6.7EV

"6:CF-BSeq/AutoC" = Choose bracketing sequence (standard, under and super exposed or under, standard and super exposed) and set/unset AEB auto cancel

"7:CF-SI Disp." = Turn on or off the display of the red focus dots during focusing.

"8:CF-Menu Posi." = Choose what item in the menu will be hilighted when you go to the menu (Top = always the first option; Previous = Last item highlighted before leaving the menu the last time; Prev/Top (PwrDwn) = Go to previous hilighted item while the camera is on, go to the top item after turning the camera off and on)

"9:CF-Safe.Shift" = In Tv and Av modes, the safety shift setting allows the pre-selected aperture or shutter speed to be changed by the camera if a sudden change in subject brightness renders the exposure unsuitable.

"?10:CF-L.AFButt" = Changes the function of the AF stop buttons (only available on IS super-telephoto lenses).

"?11:CF-Decis.Da." = Add Original Decision Data, some info used to check if the photo is as shot, or if it has been altered (as far as I know, additional software is required to verify the data)

"12:CF-Flash" = Turn on or off the speedlite/flash (even if the internal flash is open, it won't fire if this setting is off)

"13:Shutt.Count" = Display the shutter release count

"14:TimeLapse" = Create pictures every [user set 1-999] sec. Example : 100 x 5s --- take 100 pictures at every 5 sec.
Right - increase time by 1 sec
Left - decrease time by 1 sec
Play - increase # of pictures by 1
Menu - double # of pictures (after like 10 million it goes back to 0)

"15:AFPSelection" = how you can select the Auto Focus Point
Standard = nothing changed from original set
Wheel Off = you can NOT use the wheel when selecting AFP. You can still use the Up, Down Left and Right button + the presets for APF (eg. : set + zoom out)
Blocked = You can only use the presets for APF (eg. : set + zoom out)

"16:AFPoints 1" = set the Auto Focus Point
the AF helping light of my external flash doesn't work when you're using a set that is not standard.
Use left/right in the info menu to move the cursor and set to activate/deactivate the selected points.
If all points are selected in a set the menu will show

this stands for top, left, left-center, center, center-right, right, bottom.
the point where the cursor is set to will be in lowercase. non-selected points will show a blank, with cursor set on them a @

"17:AFPoints 2" = see "16:AFPoints 1"

"18:AFPoints 3" = see "16:AFPoints 1"

"19:Review time" = # of seconds picture will be displayed after taking it. This can now be set to
Hold : display image until any button pressed
OFF: doesn't display any image after picture was taken
1 to 30 sec : display image for user set time --- the maximum values are user settable in the file user_settings.txt, they are not fixed to 30 s

"20:AutoPowerOff" = puts camera into sleep mode. This setting can be set to :
Off: never goes into sleep mode
1 to 60 min : goes into sleep mode after user set time (1 minute increments) --- the maximum values are user settable in the file user_settings.txt, they are not fixed to 60 min.

"21:FlashExComp" = Flash Exposure Compensation. This setting can be set to :
-6 to +6 in 1/3 increments (standard was -2 to +2)

Other note from crazyklaus:
the menu order can also be set and items that you don't need can be left out.

Quality menu (can be configured to be available via the SET button in the custom functions)
zoom-out: af points set 1
zoom-in: af points set 2
direct-print: af points set 3

ISO menu:
zoom-out: ISO 100
zoom-in: ISO 3200
direct-print: ISO 400

AF menu:
zoom-out: LCD brightness level : 1
zoom-in: LCD brightness level : 5
direct-print: LCD brightness level : 3

WB menu:
zoom-out: Kelvin
zoom-in: Auto BW
direct-print: Custom WB (automatically picks the last image)

measuring method menu:
zoom-out: go to beep menu
zoom-in: spot measurement
direct-print: go to parameter menu

beep menu:
zoom-out: toggle flash on/off (red led flashes to show flash is enabled, blue led to show disabled)
zoom-in: toggle safety shift on/off (red enabled, blue disabled)
direct-print: toggle mirror lock-up (red enabled, blue disabled)

Is there a way to get ISO 50 and ISO 25? I dont care about the "less noise". All i care about if i can slow down the shutter speed to achieve cool affects. (Sometimes ISO 100 and F45 is not enough)

I agree that lower ISOs can come in handy (I sometimes use ISO 50 on the 5DmkII for this reason) but you can always put a 10-stop ND filter on your lens...
