Unfortunately, there is no universal method of software switching camera to record mode when USB cable is connected.
Because a720 has a slide mode switch, try run this lua script on fresh CHDK version (in playback mode, USB cable must be connected):

post_levent_to_ui("PressRecButton")

If the lens comes out, it would be great.

When your script line is starting with autostart method in play mode, the camera switches in the record mode (lens comes out). The PC detect the camera USB connection.

I've also tested a manual script start when print menu is displaying. It was not possible switching to record mode. I've tried different commands with reyalp's testlev script.

There is this very cheap computer with WiFi called Zipit Z2.
It is intended as a way to use messenger programs such as YIM, MSN and so on away from the computer.
The nice thing is that you can run Linux on it, and it only cost 50 bucks.
It does not come with an USB connector, however there are some USB pins in the back connector. And there is some work at a kernel that will support USB host mode.

If someone gets it to work in conjunction with the PTP interface, the possibilities are endless. You can control you camera remotely from your PC and use it as a security webcam and all kind of cool stuff, by writing a relatively simple client/server that uses TCP/IP.

Ok, I almost made test version for a720, but I cannot understand how works palette in this camera.
Could you made dump of RAM (debug menu->alt +/- debug action = DmpRAM, then press +/- in <alt> mode, dump is stored in DCIM/100CANON/IMG_0001.JPG) and upload zipped dump somewhere?

Thanks for your great job.

The programm is working perfect. All functions are available. The average frame rate is 6 fps. Scripts are also ok.

The CHDK PTP interface and the logical event functions are a quantum leap in the history of CHDK!

rudi from the german chdk forum was so impressed by the PTP interface that he has made a version for the A590 101b.

And then there's a small thing:

The chdkcam program has a small incompatibility to the trunk version.
set_capture_mode -> trunk version
set_capture_mode_type -> necessary for PTP version

Anmerkung: Wir haben festgestellt, dass die Cursor-Steuerung über den Ziffernblock im Wiedergabe-Modus erst nach ersten Umschalten in den Aufnahme-Modus und wieder zurück, funktioniert.

Because all camera keys (except DP button) are blocked when USB is connected in playback mode. But we can unlock it using simple script (value is only for a710):
post_levent_to_ui(0x1144) // unnamed event, only for a710
0x1143 value also unlocks keyboard, but blocks power button.

I've checked the unnamed events for the a720 and found the right events for keyboard unlock: 0x1184 and 0x1185 (with blocked power button)

edit: For the A590 we can also use 0x1184.

Using script with loop, something like:

If camera menu opens, goal is reached. If camera reboots, or shutdowns with "E00" message, or low battery icon starts (stops) blinking, goal is near.

Thanks, I got it after all (for the record, it's also 0x1184 on this little Ixus).

It'd never cross my mind to expect, and look for an unnamed (!) event that would mysteriously unlock (!!) the keys! I start to think -- and maybe I suspected it before -- that even the "H" in someone's signature is not all there is to it...

P.S. Regretfully, the later versions of chdkcam don't like my little camera and refuse to connect -- I must've patched something wrong. Strangely enough, mweerden's ptpcam connects flawlessly...
