I can confirm that it works (threshold 200) when changing the light from none to normal, but any smaller movement than that is not detected. So the motion detection basically works, but it's not usable for anything.
It does also sometimes work when moving the camera, but only very few cells get triggered and only when moving the camera quickly from a dark place to the computer screen.

Do you tried motion detection on another type of camera? I'm just curious, if there is anything can be improved excluding the framebuffer memory address. What is the expected work to say, it's usable?

I'll try to get an SX10 for a week, to compare the actual features between SX20 and SX10.

I'm not able to test the motion detection on any other camera, but I found pictures in the german chdk forum that show pictures created with the md_fast script on a SX10: http://www.wirklemms.de/chdk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1133

Such pictures are certainly not possible with your current chdk port for the SX20, because it does only recognize very big changes (like turning the light on or off). That's why I call tje current motion detection unusable - such big changes are simply not there when I want to do motion detection.

I think regarding motion detection it would be interesting to see how it performs on the SX200. It probably has the same 12MP sensor which is an important part in motion detection because of the noise that it produces (which gets recognized as motion if the threshold is too low) and other specialities. But I couldn't find any infos about motion detetion on the SX200, maybe you'll find something.

I'm looking forward to new versions of your chdk port, which will most likely improve when you get the SX10 for comparison.

You are using fudgey's Fast MD script (https://chdk.setepontos.com/d/471/109) ?
Normally it should work with the default parameters.

You can try to use a mask (this was/is needed for the SX1, if i remember correctly), e.g. mask out the outer areas...

Thank you, fe50! This script works really well on my SX20. I tested it indoors with the default settings - no mask, threshold of 10 - and it worked perfectly when moving my hand before the camera or throwing things around. Sometimes, when the moving object was very fast, it wasn't visible on the photo, because the photo was taken too late. I have to add that I didn't change any settings (except the cell number to 8x6)!

edit: I tested it again today. Sometimes it works as described above, and sometimes it taks photos continuosly. I think it has something to do with the lighting.

Has anyone else tried to load this version of CHDK on a card that is larger than 4 Gigs? I have an SX1 and an SX20. I was able to create a small partition and run CHDK on the SX1 so that it sees the larger petition for picture storage. However, when I tried this with the SX20 it did not recognize the large petition. I get the CHDK menu, but it tells me that the memory card is full, which leads me to believe that it is only seeing the 2 Meg petition where the DISKBOOT.BIN is located.

Has anyone else had any luck getting this to work.

Hello everyone,

RAW is main thing I'm interesting in regarding my sx20. Recently I tried SX10's CHDK with replaced DISKBOOT.BIN. Since native CRW files are not recognizable with any known software I decided to go with DNG which requires badpixel.bin file on card. First, I launched badpixel.lu and after taking two shots it asked me to press 'Set' to save the file. When 'Set' pressed, camera says it has 5464 bad pixels and messages me with "(3😎 attempt to index global 'os' (a nil value) PRESS SHUTTER TO CLOSE". Then I press shutter and it says "*** INTERRUPTED ***". I presume something gone wrong there :S This operation creates bad_temp.bin on card. I tried to rename it to the required badpixel.bin and shot some pictures. They appeared as DNG-files, but just inclined stripes were inside them (see attached file).

Is this ok because of beta stage of software or this case can lead your to something improve the code? Anyway any answer appreciated, or even better a solution to this issue.

By the way the count of bad pixels is constantly 5464 and size of raw image is 4028x3018.

I tried to use a 16gb sdhc 6 card, with two partitions, it works correctly(as far as i can tell)
I takes about 2sec to take a DNG file.
I partitioned it using linux with the method described here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card

On windows platform it is a pain in the *** to use cards with more than one partition, as windows sees only the first partition.

I tried some drop shots today, but it seems as if the sx20 is too slow for that. I've attached the best of the many pictures. I'll try the speed test now, to see the actual speed of the camera.

I tried the speed test now using the test on http://dataghost.com/chdk/md_meter.html. I had to mask out the lower half of the screen, so only the upper half is active, because the motion detection didn't work otherwise (continuos shots). In manual mode with flash enabled I get speeds around 240ms. Without flash in manual mode the speed is around 180-200ms (all three, 180, 190 and 200 are displayed, but between black and grey - due to the longer exposure).

Thanks for the response. When you tried this are you sure CHDK was seeing the larger petition? I partitioned the card with sdminste.exe on windows XP. As I said, this works for my SX1, but not for the SX20. I'll try it again from scratch.

What was the partition type of the second partition? sdminste.exe creates it as type 11. Perhaps I need to change it to a different type.

BTW, on Windows you can use sdminste.exe to swap the partitions. This allows you to access the partition with the pictures fairly easily. It is an extra step, but only takes a minute.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm using an 8 Gig SanDisk card, SD HC, Class 4. I wonder why I can't get it to work. I have a dumb question. I downloaded a copy of DISKBOOT.BIN provided in this thread, the rest of the data on the card (such as PS.FI2 and the CHDK directory) I borrowed from my SX1 directory. Do I need some other file besides DISKBOOT to get this to work? What is in the PS.FI2 file?

The diskboot.bin is the CHDK binary file; it get loaded with the autoboot start method.
The ps.fi2 (ps.fi on older cameras) is the same CHDK binary file, prepared/encoded to use with the manual loading method (with "Firmware update" from the Canon menu).

Yo'll need no more files besides the CHDK binary (diskboot.bin or ps.fi2) to run CHDK.
The "complete" package contains additional files like test scripts, language files, support files for the games etc. and also othe helpfull things, so you should copy those files to your card, too...

(increase or reduce the fine JPEG compression to improve the overall quality of photos at the expense of size on the card).

Thank you fe50. Unfortunately that puts me back to my original problem. CHDK on my SX1 recognizes the two partitions on a large card, but CHDK on my SX20 does not recognize two partitions (same card). It comes up and immediately says that the memory card is full. I tried the "swap partition" option in CHDK, but it told me there was only one partition.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a copy of sdminste.exe? If not then down load it. You can use it to swap the partitions so that the larger partition is the first partition. Windows will then be able to access it. You'll have to swap it back to run CHDK on the camera, but this partition swap only takes a minute.
