sorry guys....tested 2mb exmem...video still doesn't want to record.
will occasionally go for a while, but most times cancels right away.

any ideas?

Can you try this:
- build CHDK without exmem (all the exmem options turned off), turn off games, textreader & calendar as well to keep the size down. Make sure OPT_LUA_CALL_NATIVE is enabled.
- Copy reyalps exmeminf.lua script (attached) to your scripts folder on the SD card.
- Start CHDK and just record a video.
- Run the exmeminf.lua script.
- Post the contents of the EXMEMINF.LOG file that the script creates.

the exmem_alloc that fmb found at 0xFF889D7C sx20 1.02b....should that be the same for the 1.02d?

the stubs_entry_2 file you gave me has the exmem_alloc at :
NHSTUB(exmem_alloc, 0xFF889DCC)

the file also mentions something about not looking like sx10?

I am confused.

I am confused.

Firmware addresses often change between versions. If the address of exmem_alloc was wrong it would most likely crash instead of allocating the memory.

i took a video, worked great, then ran the script...and saved the file to computer
then i also tryed running the script while video was recording....froze the camera, had to open batt compartment to restart...

Nothing wrong, I was hoping it might show something; but at least it confirms the memory pools are the same as other cameras.

Attached is a test version that allocates the memory differently. Please try the diskboot.bin from this version and see if you can record a video (exmem is in testing mode with 4MB allocated).

I thought it would be the same - just a shot in the dark to try out an idea.

Attached is a modified version of the lua script to dump the exmem info.
This one starts recording in the script, dumps the info then stops recording.
This should avoid the crash if you try and run a script while recording.

To use this change to video record mode on the camera dial and make sure you are in record (not playback) mode.
Select and run the exmem2.lua script - it should record a short movie and also dump the exmem log.

Run this using a non-exmem version of CHDK (all exmem options turned off).

I installed the latest 1146 build this morning and now video work great and the camera doesn't crash either. I think Phil as finally found a fix. 😀

Hey there Wowsers,

yes, Philmoz has completely fixed the startup crashes with the patch that he introduced and is now standard in 1146 for the sx20.

the other thing we are playing with now is Exmem...a different way of the camera using the internal memory. this is what was causing the video to not want to record. It is not working smoothly yet but will get there.

I don't understand the problem with the video.
When i use video with "Video Mode" [Default] and "Video Quality" up to 99 then all works fine. With exmem and without exmem settings.
When i use video with "Video Mode" [Quality] then i have the same problem like bdasmith. With exmem and without exmem settings.

Why do you think, this is a problem with memory?

It's not turned on by default, so it should be fine. Just makes it easier for anyone else to experiment with it if they want.

the problem i am running into involves:
"Video Mode" [Default]
"Video Quality" 84 (default)

video works fine on sx20 1.02 d firmware without exmem, but even with exmem set to 2mb buffer and the proper memisostart address, the video does not want to record.

thats why were trying to track down the problem for the d firmware....i am happy that the 1.02 b firmware is working great with this. 😀 now want it to work with d to!

Well, for me, the video feature work perfectly except when I put it to the "quality" mode it doesn't work but this is a feature that never worked before either so I am not worried about that because at the default setting, it is very sharp anyway.

Now the video mode work and there is NO crash. I'm very happy.

Thanks, that's what I thought it would give.

Can you try one more test, run the same exmem2.lua script; but this time using exmem with 2MB of exmem and the OPT_EXMEM_TESTING option enabled (OPT_CHDK_IN_EXMEM) disabled.
