It is interesting that the digital zoom works well up to x8.2, then remains fixed the lower part of the picture, which increases along with increasing zoom.
Towards the enhancement of the x13 image appears in the upper left corner where it continues to increase.

In changeset 1912, i've made a590 get the actual viewport sizes from the camera in rec mode. The stitch offset is not implemented, so it will probably appear in the upper left.

It works well, increased x13 and x16 live view is half size.

Can anyone build the firmware for a459-100f and provide me a link ? I tried getting the arm compiler setup, but ran into issues. Would be easier if you can help me get the build.

I want to try the live view dumps, and show them as a preview for a photobooth.

While its a little early to declare victory, today I succeeded in getting chdkptp to compile natively and run on a Raspberry Pi connected via USB to my G10. Or at least I got the CLI part working.

I tried both the Debian and Arch version of Linux for the Pi. The Arch distro was easier to get setup but it throws a Segment Error when connecting via USB to a camera. The Debian version took a lot more work to find all the right packages and dev libraries but it runs without crashing.

LiveView, here we come ! (or maybe not ...)

Thank you! I did not proof read before hitting submit. It was indeed for a495. I'll try and post my results to the thread.

Uploaded a build for raspberry pi to http://www.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/documents

This was built on the wheezy beta from here http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1435 - may or may not work on other distros.

Here's the steps I used to build it:

installed the following packages
liblua5.1-0-dev
libusb-dev
subversion (not required, used to check out the source but you can download it some other way)
zip (only needed for making the zipped binary snapshot package)

checked out the chdkptp source
$ svn co https://tools.assembla.com/svn/chdkptp/trunk chdkptp
create chdk/core inside the chdkptp directory, and copy ptp.h and live_view.h from the chdk trunk into it

$ cp config-sample-linux.mk config.mk
edit config.mk, changing
CHDK_SRC_DIR=/path/to/chdk/source
to
CHDK_SRC_DIR=chdk

$ make
$ cp chdkptp-sample.sh chdkptp.sh,

edit chdkptp.sh, change CHDKPTP_DIR to /home/pi/chdkptp

The resulting build doesn't have gui, and for some reason needs to be run as root to access the cam. Seems to work though.

I am trying to run chdkptp.exe on Windows 7/64-bit with my A590IS-101b.
The program runs fine but when I try to do anything
I get one of these errors:

update mode dropdown nil
error: no devices availableupdate mode dropdown nil
ERROR: not connected

I have libusb installed and ptpCamGui2.0.121 running and working without a problem.

Am I missing something?

This is the only message that matters. chdkptp isn't seeing any cameras. I use win7 64bit as my primary development platform, so it's not an OS issue.

CHDKPTP should be able to see any device ptpcam can see. It might not see it if the camera is in use by another program.

There are two ways to install the USB driver: The "inf driver" and "filter driver". I found the filter driver very unreliable. The inf driver works great, but means non-libusb programs will generally not see the camera.

I re-installed libusb + a reboot (no needed but did it anyway). And that did it!

I like chdkptp's clean to the point compact UI.

There are some programs that let you use any window or area of a screen as a web cam. See this post

I got SCFH-DSF at least partially working, but it just crashed skype when I tried to use it. I didn't try any other software.

If someone knows a of a free library that lets you feed a stream of images into a virtual webcam device under windows, please let me know. I guess the SCFH-DSF code could be hacked to do this.

It looks like video4linux has some loopback drivers, so doing this on linux might actually be easier.

Or you could just go out and buy a $20 webcam with much higher resolution* 😉 That said, being able to feed the live view to standard streaming software could have some interesting applications.

* and much crummier optics.

A follow up on the memory issue. I did another test with a borrowed camera that had free_block_max_size=328k . It began downloading ~300 photos but aborted after saving ~160 photos. I didn't catch any error message. Could it also be due to low memory? Or are there any other known issues with the mdl command in chdkptp? Again, ptpCamGui.exe could downloaded all the images so I think it is an issue with chdkptp.

~~This is probably fixed in trunk 1950 / release 1951~~

On further reflection, this is probably not true since the memory leak only affected PC->Camera messages, which are not really used in the download process.

Is that specific to my camera,or for all cameras under the windows version of the s/w? or am I doing something wrong.? Is there a different s/w that woudl give live view and remote shutter release for multiple cameras?

The GUI currently only supports controlling one camera at a time. The underlying API does support multiple simultaneous connections.

There are currently no other clients that support the live view protocol.

There is no separate non-gui version, if you start chdkptp with -c (or any command line option other than -g) it starts in command line mode. I suggest you read http://trac.assembla.com/chdkptp/browser/trunk/USAGE.TXT

However, as I said multiple cameras are currently only supported in the API. That means you'll need some Lua code to control them. There is a module called multicam included with chdkptp, which provides some functions for this, but it's quite experimental and unfinished.

I don't understand how you expect to do live view without a GUI ? You can retrieve the data using the lua API, but you'd need to write code to display it. You could use the cameras hardware video out and video grabber I guess...

As an alternative, if you don't need the shots to happen at exactly the same time, you could run two instances of the gui. To do this you'll need connect in way that specifies each camera without having to establish a connection. This can be problematic if they are the same model. See the "connect" command in the above linked USAGE.TXT. The best way to do this is probably to open one instance, use the list command to get the dev/bus IDs and then connect using those. Connecting by name or serial number will not work, because you must establish a connection to get those, and that will disrupt the other instance.

Thanks, I d/l'd the unstable trunk version of chdk that you referenced. Now the program works (e.g. shutter release, etc). However it still gives the same error message that the live view is not supported.
