Trying to get CHDK working on A650IS

I am trying to get CHDK to work but have not been successful (A650IS).  I followed the instructions in the Wiki.

I downloaded CHDK - 1.70-148-a650-100d-57.zip.
Unzipped it.
Copied the 2 files (PS.fir and Diskboot.bin) to the root of a 4GB, FAT32 card.
Locked the card & inserted in camera.
Put camera in playback mode, turned camera on, pressed menu button and then up button once.
I don't see any  entry for "Firm Update".  The menu system only shows an entry titled Transition (same as normal working).

I then took an old 1GB card, formatted it as FAT16 and followed the procedure above.  Same problem.  Nada, zip, nothing.  No sign of CHDK or a menu entry called "Firm Update".

I've tried both cards both locked and unlocked.  No change with this as well.

Any ideas?  What to do now?

============================

Q. How do I get CHDK onto my camera's SD memory card?

A. Follow these steps:

    * Remove the SD card from your camera and put it in the card reader of your PC.
    * Extract the files from the firmware zip file that you have downloaded.
    * Copy the files PS.fir and Diskboot.bin into the root folder of your SD card.
    * Put the SD card back into the camera.

Q. How do I manually load CHDK so I can use it?

A. Follow these steps:

    * First, copy CHDK onto your camera's SD memory card (see that question above)
    * Start the camera in Play mode.
    * Press the Menu button.
    * Go to the new menu entry "Firm Update" (usually, it's the last option in the menu).

A650 is a DryOS cam, they don't have the firmware upgrade option (yet)
You have to use the autostart option.

Read some instructions / tips here User:Intrnst - CHDK Wiki

There's also a PDF user guide being developed here CHDK End-User's Guide 03  - 16-MAY-08

OK, CHDK is working now.  Seems like one MUST use the Cardtricks install to make the card bootable.  Seems like you can't do a manual load with DryOS cameras?

I've read the PDF user guide.  It's very helpful BUT it is oriented towards some other camera (A720 I think), not the A650IS I have.  Many options shown are missing in the software I have.

Also, seems like there should be separate forum section for each camera model here so users owing a particular model can easily find and help others with the same camera.

Do I ask specific questions here or is there somewhere else I should be going to?

Some open questions:

1. There is a red bar that shows Zoom 7.4 F (and goes up to 44.4 F).  I don't understand what this means since the camera zoom is to 6x.  On the same red bar is a label for "Synch:0.0000".  I don't understand what this is.  I would be happy to remove this red bar and info in it but there doesn't appear to be any control to do so.

2. What numbers should be set for battery Min/Max voltage?  I have rechargeable 2700 mAh batteries.  Should the numbers be 2700 and 0 [zero]?

3. I have two 4gb SDHC cards.  I am running OK on the 4GB card but had to format it to FAT16 with non-standard 64k clusters.  What is the problem with supporting FAT32?  Isn't FAT16 slower and less reliable than FAT32?

4. I increased the maximum shutter speed to 1/10,000 but even in Tv mode, the camera won't go past the normal 1/2,000 speed.

5. There doesn't appear to be any support for remaining filespace on the card like is illustrated in the PDF user guide.

OK, CHDK is working now.  Seems like one MUST use the Cardtricks install to make the card bootable.

You have installed 'StereoData Maker' (SDM).
You do not need CardTricks, it has its own programme to make card bootable.

Full instructions here :  http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm

Many options shown are missing in the software I have.
SDM has its own features, it does not include some features that are in standard CHDK.

1. There is a red bar that shows Zoom 7.4 F (and goes up to 44.4 F).  I don't understand what this means since the camera zoom is to 6x.

It is the actual focal-length of the lens.
You can display MiscValues if you want equivalent focal-length or zoom factor.

On the same red bar is a label for "Synch:0.0000".  I don't understand what this is.

All explained on SDM website.

The Canon-indicated will not, the actual speed does.

Yes, I was wondering what that stereo stuff was.  Still don't know.  What is this stereo for?  I got this release on Sourceforge.

I just went back there to look again and see their is another version labeled Allbest.  I will download and try that version.

I got this release on Sourceforge.

Hello jojo99, sorry for the inconvenience with the link in wikia...

The official downloads for the stable Allbest builds, ready to use, are HERE - the latest
"Autobuilds" (=beta version, caution with this)  for the Allbest CHDK HERE.

...TO USER ADCZ: Why do you always bring so much confusion in the wikia - that's counterproductive ! **Argh**

to jojo99: sorry bout that. I should've probably put a warning on the link, saying it contains ALL the builds.

to fe50:
I think Sourceforge is a better download place (more organized). If you wanna join, you can mark whichever builds as (Current) and all the others, beta or old, or whatever. I did my part - uploaded all the builds.

I installed "allbest-a650-100d-50.zip" (from Sourceforge) and it is working fine now.  Thanks.

Open questions:
1. I don't understand the shutter speed control.  From reading the PDF guide it sounds like this setting is an absolute setting.  So if I wanted to experiment with shots at 1/5000 sec, then I would set the override to 1/5000, the value factor to 1 and the enum type to Ev Step. The shutter speed would then be 1/5000 for every shot until I disabled this control and the standard camera control would not apply.  Is this correct?

2. Is there any hope for support for the FAT32 format for larger cards?

3. Under the OSD Parameters->Battery, what is the proper settings for Max & Min for NIMH 2700 batteries?

4. I tried taking some RAW photos.  There is quite a delay when doing so.  Is this due to the FAT formatting?

And the CDW format does not seem to be the the same as the standard Canon format.  Is this correct?

Download away :)
And good luck with CHDK!

You got it! You press:
1) ALT
2) Menu
3) Extra Photo Operations
4) Select Override Shutter speed. Then, you can either:
a) For shutter speed enum type select Ev Step or Factor
i) Ev Step: Value factor either 1 or Off. Value in Override Shutterspeed will be your shutterspeed
ii) Factor: Multiplies Value in OVerride Shutter Speed with Value Factor (much easier in some cases)

2. Is there any hope for support for the FAT32 format for larger cards?
YES! In fact, if I understand correctly the current version of CardTricks (SourceForge.net: Downloading ... - This one is current, I am pretty sure :)). It says it does FAT32 on bigger cards. Also you can create 2 partitions, a FAT16 for CHDk and a FAT32 for pics. Uuuh I believe DataGhost did it (bootable sdhc cards) (Why do you need FAT32 anyways? You have a 4GB card, if I am not mistaken? Those can handle FAT16)

3. Under the OSD Parameters->Battery, what is the proper settings for Max & Min for NIMH 2700 batteries?
Hah! I have been trying to figure that out myself! If anybody knows, PLEASE tell me :)

I doubt it. It's just RAW shots are huge (on my 8MP camera a bit under 10 MB rather than regular 3-4 MB shots). This is because there is no compression.

Umm...not sure if it is a standard, but no "standard" program opens it. However there is a program called DNG4PS-2 (DNG4PS-2)

Hi jojo99,

i'll try to give you a few short answers...

#1: Yes, but after power off & on this setting is off by default  (adjustable, see last menu item "Clear override values on start)

#2: You can use 4GB with FAT16 format, the multi partition support for cards > 4GB is model dependend, (try to find more via searching for multiboot...)

#3: Sorry, i have no A650/NiMH, but you can figure them out with the OSD values (voltage on full batts -- when the low batt warn sign appears) and post them (or append them in the wikia for your camera model)...

#4: bigger files, depends on card speed (see also Wikia Benchmarks).

#5: Yes - use e.g. DNG4PS-2 to convert them in DNG format (seel also * in my Signature & have a look to the wikia)

Pls. note: Some of then newest features / modifications are only available at the the latest Autobuild version...
