Missing some CRW files

I've been using AllBest Build 50 on my G7 for several weeks and have been very pleased with how well it works, at least until today. My wife and I went to a car show and I took about 40 pictures but when I got home, I found some of the CRW files were missing, although all the JPG images were there.

The missing CRW images seemed to be random although sometimes there were clusters of 3 or 4 in a row that were missing. I turned the camera On/Off many times during the event but have no way to tell if the missing CRW images occurred after power cycling the camera.

I have a family wedding to shoot this weekend and am concerned about encountering this problem again. Does anyone have any ideas what caused this and how to resolve it? Thanks in advance.

Either there's a bug or you're not aware of the RAW shortcut. See also

DougC,

have you also checked whether the missing files are in an other folder (DCIM100) ?
The first RAW file after power on the camera will always be saved in this folder with the wrong date / time, that's a known issue with RAW files..."files created on "1/01/00 00:00"

Thanks fudgey and fe50 for your suggestions. I am aware of the RAW shortcut and I'm pretty sure I didn't accidentally press the Trashcan button while in ALT mode, although I can't be positive. Furthermore, in several cases I took 3 or 4 shots of the same car from different angles and only one of the RAW images of that set was missing. It's possible I was accidentally turning RAW on and off but it's unlikely.

I looked through the entire 2GB flash card from the camera and the missing RAW images weren't anywhere else on the flash card, so that rules that out.

I'm really baffled by this strange behavior so if anyone has any other ideas or things to check, I'd be grateful. I'll shoot a bunch of test pics today to see if I can duplicate the problem.

Doug, can you do some tests with a newer build (perhaps the latest Autobuild) ?
Perhaps there is/was a bug in the G7 code...
You should also use a fresh formated card with a newly installed CHDK, sometimes there can be problems with the chdk.cfg config file on changing the build...

This is really getting strange! I reformatted the SD card and installed the allbest-g7-100g-51-444 software from the Autobuild section. After configuring my settings, I took a bunch of pictures to see what percentage of RAW images I got. I found I had NONE. RAW was enabled and the screen display was telling me how many RAW pictures I had left but this number didn't decline as I took pictures. I shot about 10 pictures but didn't have a single RAW image on the card.

I reformatted the SD card and reloaded the software for a second time but still no RAW. I then reformatted the card and went back to the previous software (allbest-g7-100g-50) but STILL NO RAW. Now I'm going crazy because this used to work most of the time.

After much experimentation, I found the source of this problem - the internal flash was set to OFF. I turned it off because I was taking a bunch of test pictures in the house and didn't want the flash going off. After turning the flash back to AUTO, I now got RAW images. RAW works if the flash is set to AUTO or ON but no RAW images are recorded if the flash is set to OFF.

While this appears to be a bug, it wasn't the cause of my intermittent problem yesterday because the flash was set to AUTO then, like it usually is.

I'll go back to the allbest-g7-100g-51-444 software (with the flash on AUTO) and try some test shots again and report back on how many had RAW images.

Well, I'm running the latest allbest-g7-100g-51-444 software and I haven't been able to generate any missing RAW files. I turned the camera on/off many times and took pictures immediately after turning it on and also after it had been on for a while. All 18 images had both RAW and JPG files, so unless somebody has some further ideas, I'll see how it goes during the wedding I'm shooting next weekend.

Uhm, BSS is still puzzling me a bit; it mostly works, but sometimes it bails out and mostly gives "file unreadable". If I remember the error messages I put in it correctly, "file unreadable" means that get_target_file_num() or whatever it's called gives BSS a number, but then the corresponding file can't be opened.

BSS file registering happens at the same time, and in just about the same way, as raw saving.
So maybe it's the same root problem.

Why would get_target_file_num() or get_target_dir_num() ever give anything other than the file being written?

Thanks, LjL. Since I'm not a programmer, most of what you said went over my head. Are you saying there is a known error that sometimes generates unreadable RAW files and might be related to the missing RAW files?
