i just found a way to shutdown lcd. just plugin a jack of a headphonecable or any other jack that is suitable. motion detection still works. dont know if you save energy though, because the a/v output also consumes power *have to analyze it somehow*

A nice find indeed. Tried it successfully on my a570is. :)
IMO, it's highly unlikely that the a/v output would draw a significant amount of power compared to the LCD+backlight.

Of course, this way the script itself can't have any control over the display or power usage, but at least we now know one easy way to conserve batteries using current builds!

I used a jack without a cable and it works. I don't think that can consume any power. There must be a contact to detect the jack, may be that can be overriden by CHDK?

Is there a way of using this toggle to keep the EVF/LCD displays LIT while an A/V cable is plugged in?
Unfortunately, no. Only enable/disable/emulate A/V cable plugging detection.

i just voted to adjust colors of lcd... for me it's annoing sometime that i can't set anything on the lcd on my a630...
it would be nice to have a contrast-brightness (and lcd backlight) control ...it's too bright, the highlights are clipped on the screen
many times, when taking pictures with sync-flash i don't know that the picture is really overexposed or just the display shows wrong... i have to use histogram but it  takes time :P
