Real-time video analysis with CHDK

Hi all!

Let me introduce myself. I work at the Image Processing lab of the university of Liege in Belgium. My job develop fast video segmentation and analysis algorithm that could be embedded in various devices.

Using the source code of CHDK, we were able to embed one of our algorithms and to output its result directly to the screen. Our algorithm is similar to the motion detection algorithm already present in CHDK with the notable difference that it provides a distinct detection for every pixel of the screen of the digicam (in comparison, CHDK's motion detection use a grid of something like 10x10 zones).

We made a YouTube video showing the result for those interested:
ViBe video segmentation embedded on a Canon digicam with CHDK

I'm not sure that such a resolution is needed to trigger the capture of a photography but it could be used to help the auto-focus to concentrate on moving parts of the image (eg. for sport or children photography).

In any case, this shows that thanks to CHDK, computer vision researchers like us now have a portable platform on which they can embed their creations!

Thanks for the good work!

This is extremely interesting !

I am working on a movie-capture problem at the moment so will contact you regarding the movie task.

I think you may be able to offer some valuable advice.

I am sure member Hiker_Jon (Jon Harman) will also be very interested.

Oliver,

This is great. I was wondering if you someone might be able to use your algorithm to turn a canon powershot into what is called an "autoguider" for a telescope.

There are two great shareware apps "phd guider" and "guidestar" which pick a bright star on an image and then monitor movement of the camera with subpixel accuracy using pixel brightness variation.

This is then converted into guiding directions for a telescope using an ascom platform protocol for cameras.

It would be well received.

This is great stuff! Where exactly will that be used?

Personal Note @ Microfunguy: i don't like that you try to contact people via pm or mail or you want people to contact YOU in regards to things all users might be interested in, especially developers. This is once again the case in this very thread here. i am not very active around here anymore, but i do see this behaviour of yours from time to time. You trying to "advertise" SDM in the CHDK forum is an already known fact you cannot deny (but i will not stop you from doing so), but i really don't get why in an open source environment you try to harvest information via means of email etc for your own use. be it for new camera ports or whatever.

i don't like

Remove email and instant-messaging links from Member profile, disable forum PM feature and cease-and-desist from using IRC.

Your comments are of absolutely no interest and I am not discussing this further.

There is no script. This was a special version of CHDK, was never published.
