Well, whether you use SDM or not, I need to get this sorted-out.

Colin, can I suggest you make sure that the ONLY file on the card is DISKBOOT.BIN. No other files (and no folders) should be present if you want to get to the bottom of what is wrong.

It sounds to me as though somewhere on the card you have another file (eg a CFG file) that is causing the problems. Eliminating all files except DISKBOOT.BIN will clear this up. SDM will start up perfectly well with just DISKBOOT.BIN.

zeno that is correct, only the DISKBOOT.BIN file.
After it is Loaded, flashed 1.84, crashed & shut down the camera, there appears on the SD card a folder that is empty, CHDK.
I have been deleting this.

I need to get some sleep now, sorry half past mid-night in the middle of winter for me :-)

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear  ............

The US tester says that it boots fine, as I suspected.

I have no idea what the problem is.

Anyway, you can use CHDK motion detection.

Oh dear is right :-)

I will try to learn CHDK Motion Detection.
Sorry for all the trouble I have caused, &  thanks very much for your help & patience.
Cheers

@colinbm,
Sorry, I have no experience with using the inbuilt CHDK PIR detection. I am a hardware guy not software. I have an application where I prefer to use an external PIR detector and use CHDK scripting for other purpose.

I gutted and experimented with a ball type 240 volt AC mains sensor I purchased from Bunnings for $10. Gutting the 240 volts was the easy part. I managed to get the unit working on 5 volts DC. The problem was that the internal electronics was surface mount technology and mostly redundant.

My conclusion is that for anyone contemplating using external general purpose photographic PIR detection, the circuit referenced in my previous post would be suitable. http://http//www.glolab.com/pirparts/appckt.pdf

The cheap ball type mains PIR are small, lightweight and convenient to mount on a camera bracket. The only foreseeable problem is that the Fresnel lens used in security PIR's are not suitable for general purpose photography. You would need to remove the Fresnel lens and use a flat piece of plastic which will permit PIR detection. There is enough room inside the housing to replace the surface mount electronics board with standard PCB components.

With a small modification the following Lightning Activated Camera Shutter Trigger would fit into the same enclosure.

FOOTNOTE:

The 240 volt AC PIR sensor units attached to light fittings, that I have encountered, use a dropping resistor and a series capacitor to drop the voltage to 12 AC. There is a bridge rectifier and capacitor circuit to rectify to 12 volt DC. The units mainly fail because the Fresnel lens deteriorates. The electronics are very similar in design. Sometimes purchasing the light fitting is cheaper than purchasing the components to built a dedicated photographic PIR detector.

Thanks thepanoguy
I appreciate both these links & will give them some thought.
The lightning pics are great, I would be happy if I can get some one day.

I purchased today from Jaycar (in Australia) a remote "Burp" Machine CAT. NO. GH1081 for $5.00.
I am sure this is cheaper them a china door bell :-) I guess removing the speaker will be enough to get it working a mini USB shutter switch. The "burps" are only short, perhaps a couple of seconds, so it will be suitable for the remote shutter, one press focus, second quick press shutter release.

Motion detection I wanted to try, but it seems better to go with the in built capacity of the camera to detect movement on its own pixels ?? If I am understanding this correctly.

Cheers
Col

As it happens, SDM has a special feature to deal with the multiple pulses from a Chinese wireless doorbell.

Unfortunately, we will never be able to test that .. one of life's mysteries.

I have recently had the camera reporting no card inserted, when there was.

This sometimes happened when I changed one DISKBOOT.BIN for another.

I had to remove the batteries and reformat the card.

Maybe your S5IS formats to FAT32 if done in the camera ?

Anyway, motion-detection scripts are next  .....

Thanks David, if I may call you that.
I find it strange that CHDK loads OK, whether I format in camera or CardTricks ?
It is in the lap of the gods at the moment :-)
With the S5, the SD card is in the same compartment as the batteries, so each time the camera is reset anyway.
I will look forward to learning about scripts & motion detection, thanks.
Cheers
