Here is a list of supported cams with their versions: For Developers - CHDK Wiki

Offtopic: That's not fair, I had written that a good reply, but as I'm using another pc at the moment I has set the cookie to 30 mins. It ran out of time while I typed. IE is that bad.

Oohh the sd card idea sounds good. Do you think they would let me try it in a shop?

jetzt: If you could you outline what you were going to say before IE deleted your message I would be very grateful if it is of use to me!

Well I wrote and wrote and wrote and then didn't know anylonger what was on the top.

Checking firmware version was also one idea, I'm quite sure they let you try it. Say you want to compare images.

I don't think the firmwares for the older cams will change, the newer ones are more pobable but also only with 15 to 30%.

Haha yeah that is annoying.  I mean if I was to buy one of the AXXX  series like the A720 IS   or any of the others, would there be a high or low chance that I would be able to use CHDK firmware? I guess some people must have bought them recently and checked what firmware they come with..

Thanks BarneyFife, are there any camera's which have a higher success rate (ie they usually come with a firmware which works with CHDK)    Sorry for all this fuss, I just reallly really want to get this working and I'm probably going to end up ordering online on amazon, so I want to be pretty confident before I buy!

Also I've just noticed that on the main page of the wiki it describes the firmware needed for the A570. However all I have found on the internet is a A570IS. Is this the same camera? And is it likely to get this one to work?

Thanks a lot zeno! I think I'll order one from there. I was slightly confused about the jump between 1.01a and 1.01e but it makes sense that they are the only two. Thank you.
