Poll the camera to find out which CCD is present. From this data you could determine what readout modes are available on each camera.

The Powershot TX-1 is currently the only camera that can record 1280x720 movies, could this mode be ported to other cameras with the exact same sensor? (do all cameras with a 1/2.5" 7.1 MP CCD all use the same Sony sensor?)

I found this list of Sony CCD sensors on the net, (these Sony CCD's are used in all IXUS & Powershots).
Riddle HQ - Digital Camera CCD development history

Assuming the TX-1 uses the ICX629 sensor, here's the specs.

ICX629     7.41M     1/2.5"     7.2     3,112     2,328     1.34     3.33     1.86     2006.3Q

well I've asked this before and hopefully it will happen. the A710IS and the A570IS have the exact same sensor. so my guess is that we should be able to record the same kind of 720p video which would be great.

Higher 320x240 FPS?
DIFFERENT SIZE AND FRAMERATE VIDEO

I guess what is needed and we don't have is a TX1 firmware dump.
720p video would be so cool and as I said I think it's possible. the ICX629 sensor basically delivers 3072x466 resolution video  which is then downsized horisontally to 1280 and upsized vertically to 720, however this was not allowed in other cams :( .
somebody dump the TX1 firmware...

Hmm... Why we do not have?

Now that the TX-1 firmware has been dumped, I'm sure the CHDK port won't be far off.
Hopefully the technique for which Canon managed to get 1280x720 movie mode will soon be revealed!
(some speculate that it is in fact 848x480 upscaled).

This project grows more interesting by the day!

that's good news. even if it may not be 720p video all the way, the samples that I've seen are pretty cool and considering the fact that variable compression is available, the videos should be pretty awesome, the IQ would kick some DV [admin: avoid swearing please] :) .
