pinouts for a DIY micro USB to mini-B USB for chdkptp

For chdkptp connection between my Rasberry Pi and my Canon cameras, I've been using

  • Output from RaspberryPi micro USB output socket
  • OTG converter from micro USB plug to Standard, rectangular, USB A socket
  • Standard cable with USB connector to mini USB B connector
  • Into my camera
I'm trying to get all my latest rig into a very small box and would like to DIY a small cable to replace the meter long Standard USB cable mentioned in step 2 above but I can't figure out the wiring.

I tried the simple Red to Red, Black to Black, White to White and Green to Green but it didn't work.

It seems more complicated than that depending on which is the device and which the host.

If anyone can direct me I'd be very happy
Cheers

Perhaps obvious, but have you tried checking your working setup with a meter?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go does describe an additional ID pin

micro to mini cables do exist. e.g. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7253UM5219 though paying more than a pi zero seems a bit steep ;)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Hi Reyalp,

Thanks for your reply.. I did find the cable I need, once I'd got clear on the correct naming of the USB types and the nature of On-The-Go (OTG)

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331825890944

At a dollar Australian, each, with free postage I ordered 5.  Hope the slow boat gets a rear wind behind it.

I did think of testing the working cable but I couldn't get the contact points of my multimeter far enough inside the micro end of the connector to touch the pads.

Make a "probe extender" by wrapping a 2" (6mm) single strand from any stranded wire around each probe tip four or five times and the use the extra length as a very tiny probe.

Of course.. I didn't think of that..

Now that I know (I think) what the OTG cables do, I'm not sure I would have been able to figure that out with just my multimeter..

I guess I was getting cocky..

My impatience for the slow boat from China cost me the ckdkptp functionality of one of my Ixus 160 AND a Raspberry Pi Zero.

There was no release of "magic blue smoke" but the USB ports proved less robust than I'd hoped, and now they don't work anymore.

Fortunately the cost amounted to less than 100 bucks (toy Aussie dollars at that), and both units still works fine excepting their USB capabilities.

So the takaway for me on this is.. don't bother DIYing tiny usb cables..  At less than a couple of dollars each, it's not worth it.
