Download Stuffit Expander and use that to expand/open the CHDK zip file.  It will now work.  Took me forever to stumble onto this!
There are other ways to do the same thing and overcome the same problem - all listed here : http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F
For a Mac,  this tool works well : http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/clickpansdm/sdminst.html

Hi,

Inquiry-- I have an SX30IS, been running for ~12mo no problems with the motion detection script.

I recently purchased an SX40HS and when CHDK is not running, the camera stays on forever.
When I load CHDK and the motion detection script on the SX40HS, it turns off randomly.

In one case, I was watching, waiting for it turn off, it turned off right when it was writing a picture (powers off) and the camera lens stays extended.

Any thoughts here?  Has anyone heard of any issue like this before?

The f/w is version "I"

Justin.

After the camera has crashed, restart it with CHDK loaded then go to the Miscellaneous Stuff menu then the Debug Parameters menu. Select the 'Save ROM crash log' at the bottom of the menu.

This will save a ROMLOG.LOG file on the SD card hopefully with details of the crash.
Upload this file to a new message here to help us diagnose the problem.

Hello,

1. This is done, I started the camera (boot/chdk->motion @ 4:38AM) localtime.
2. The last picture it took was at 8:57AM (approx).
3. Again, the time until it turns off is random.
4. I've performed the steps you have outlined and the LOG file is available here:
http://home.comcast.net/~jpiszcz/20120707/ROMLOG.LOG

5. If anything else is needed/I need to gather please let me know, thank you.

Justin.

Thanks for that.

Can you post the script you are using.
Also any CHDK override settings you have enabled (in the 'Extra Photo Operations' menu).

Hello,

I am only using CHDK and the script (no overrides), also something I noticed if you run the script with the defaults, it seems as if it may run longer than when you change the settings, I will post my settings below.

Here is the motion script being used:
http://home.comcast.net/~jpiszcz/20120707/mo01_01.bas

Here are the parameters I am using:

Also can you check the following camera settings:
- shooting mode (Auto, P, Av, Tv, etc) - I'd recommend not using Auto.
- AF Frame (recommend FlexiZone)
- Servo AF (recommend Off)
- Continuous AF (recommend Off)
- Safety MF (recommend Off)

I tried that script on my SX40 with your settings.
When the MD triggers the first time the camera starts taking photos and does not stop unless you increase the 'Begin Delay' value - does your camera do the same.

This MD script seems to work on the SX40 - http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=471.msg21328#msg21328
Use the 'VideoButtonModels' version in the zip file.

-

I use P for shooting mode.
The AF frame is default, it should be FlexiZone, I can check again.
Servo AF - I will turn off if future problems.
Continuous AF (on I believe)
Safety MF - unsure, would need o confirm.

That's weird, mine triggers only on motion (properly), maybe some other difference between the cameras?
In any event, I will try the new version and report back, thanks!

Hi,

It went "off" again, this time, the first few lines are:

05799510: UI:ShootState:0x31

Time to return this camera I think.

I did have another SX40HS and it did not turn off with the same SDHC card w/ CHDK.
