Underwater macro light ring. 4000+ lumen.

I built this awhile ago and thought you might find it of interest. It uses 16 cree XP-G LED's driven off a Li Ion battery pack.

More details... http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=227965

Im now thinking of building something less bulky for above water use.

I'd like the new light to only turn on when I take a pic and wondering how I  can achieve this.
I am guessing I can use the hot shoe connection but unsure how.
My guess is that two of the pins on the hotshoe  go closed circuit when a pic is taken. Is this correct?

If I can make it work off the hot shoe then I can make it with far less aluminium for heat sinking and also over drive the LEDs since they will only be on for less than a second ( probably 1/100th).

Thoughts?

Hi Packhorse
If you go to the forum
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,5150.msg50030.html#msg50030
I have now got one set like this.
70 mm = 70mm OD X 53 mm ID.
90 mm = 90mm OD X 73mm ID.
110mm = 110mm OD X 93mm ID.
140mm = 140mm OD X 123mm ID.

Another set like this.
60mm = 60 x 43mm.
80mm = 80 x 63mm.
100mm = 100 x 83mm.
120mm = 120 x 103mm.
140mm = 140mm x 123mm.

I have found another source for the different sizes, but exactually the same construction.

Thanks, but not really what I had in mind. Those types of LEDs lack output some what( not to mention colour) This system puts out more light than your average cars headlights.  All this light output produces a huge amount if heat. In the water its not an issue. In the air it heats up quite quickly, this causes problems. That is wht I need to look at setting it up so it works like a flash and only fires when the shutter is open.

There is no heat.

I was refering to my system. Trust me there is a huge amount of heat generated by high power LED's.

Thanks. There pic were probably taken below 20 meters with little ambiant light. Also with out the use of a tripod hence the need for a very powerfull lighting system.

Here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_shoe) that explains the two contacts needed to trigger a normal flash: (1) large center contact (2) the metal of the hotshoe.

Since this would only be the trigger source, you'd still need a circuit designed for turning the light on for a period of time and then turn it off. You might be able to re-use/salvage it from a similar device.  Good Luck!
