IXUS 860 IS - Firmware version request cannot be performed, please help :)

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to check the firmware version for my 860 IS so i followed the instructions available and so far nothing has worked.

What I've tried:
  • Downloaded Cardtricks
  • SD card formated to FAT16
  • File ver.req created (created default from Cardtricks)
  • Loaded to my 860 and started it up in playback -> pressed "func set" followed by "disp"
  • Only the string "Firmware 1.0.0.0" comes up
  • Pressing the "func set" key longer shows up the digital clock

What else I've tried:
  • Created a VER.REQ file (capital letters) -> ran the above steps
  • Created a vers.req file -> ran the above steps
  • Created a VERS.REQ file -> ran the above steps
  • Created 2 files, ver.req and vers.req in the sd card -> ran the above steps
  • Created 2 files, VER.REQ and VERS.REQ in the sd card -> ran the above steps
  • Locking and unlocking the card when all the steps, didn't work either

All i got up till now is just the simple string "Firmware 1.0.0.0" and a "OK" button OR the digital clock is i press the "func set" key long enough.

So any ideas what I might have missed OR what is wrong with my cam?

pressed "func set" followed by "disp"

try pressing AT THE SAME TIME  - read FAQ  Q.3 (see my sig):

press set first, hold it down, then press disp

whim,

Yeap, I've just tried pressing "func set" + "disp" TOGETHER (last time i held down "func set" and then pressed "disp") and on top of that I've re-traced all my initial steps with the different naming of ver.req

Nothing works. I'm still getting the "Firmware Ver 1.0.0.0" string.

Anyone else with ideas?

Oops, it was even easier:

As all other DryOS based cameras CHDK can only start from a bootable card, there's no "Firmware Update" menu item. The download contains only the file diskboot.bin !

(found here: CHDK for Dummies - CHDK Wiki)

sorry 'bout that (don't own any dryos cam)

wim

PS: and there's only 1 known version: 100C

Hi whim,

I didn't bother with the firmware version request thing and skipped straight to loading CHDK into my SD card and the zip file contains only DISKBOOT.BIN but...

when i start up my cam, nothing happened. It just complained that the card is locked and i can't do anything about it. Problem here is that it seems to not be able to detect anything that is on my card.

It's getting a bit frustrating.

No problem... you probably just forgot to make the card bootable:

(unlocked) card in reader -> start cardtricks -> check proper FAT 16 filesystem -> press 'make bootable'

then lock card, that should do it...have fun with CHDK  :D

Thanks for your time whim, I too hoped that was the problem but alas after trying for so many rounds, it is still not working. And i did make the card bootable :D That was the frustrating part, followed the instructions but nothing worked. Sigh.

I guess that leaves only few possibilities:

1) wrong diskboot.bin - are you sure you got it from an ixus860_sd870-100c.zip ?

2) you are the (unlucky) owner of a different firmware

3) try -if possible- a different card, preferably 2 Gb or less, some cards
don't allow writing to their bootsector (that's rare though)

HTH,

wim

PS: just thought of sth, if you formatted after make bootable, you'll need to do it again.
so:  format -> make bootable -> copy diskboot.bin to card

nrchy,

...what sd card do you use (capacity/type) ? - you need a non-SDHC card with <= 4GB, for SDHC cards with >4GB the card have to be prepared for multi partition support...

Try it with the sd card shipped with the camera (16/32MB), with cardtricks format it, make it bootable, copy the (fresh downloaded) diskboot.bin to the root of your card, lock the card...

*EDIT:
:) Oh, hi wim, you were faster...

2) you are the (unlucky) owner of a different firmware
hmmm - then the cam would crash, but as i understood it boots up as normal, so this seems not to be the problem...

@fe50

Since he mentioned CardTricks, it would have warned him about that (card > 4 G), though, i guess ...

wim

(re: wrong firmware possibility)  i guess you're the expert here, you own this type of cam  :D
