I think there's also an easier method of determining firmware version... Exiftool. Just drag and drop an image onto exiftool and a window will pop up with lots of information about the picture. For my pictures, I have the line 'Firmware Revision: 1.01 rev 2.00'. I think this means 1.01b, so equivalently, 1.01a would probably be '1.01 rev 1.00'.

Apart from that, I agree with Barney Fife. You'll have to do 'technical stuff' to get it to work anyway.

Shouldn't that be 2GB filesize limit?

Ok. I was wrong. It's 4GiB - 1 byte.  :P File Allocation Table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (the table on the right)
BTW  Resent Canon P&S cameras (i.e. S5IS) are able to save 4GB avi files.

Thanks GrAnd for the reply to my query about reading the RAW file from the new S5 CHDK build.

Yes, DNG2PS2 was the answer.  I have converted a .CRW file to .DNG and am able to open it in Corel PaintShop Pro X2.  (needs to be an uncompressed file)  And also able to open the converted .DNG file in the open source HDR application qtpfsgui (version 1.8.12).  Tried the newest version (1.9) and found it is unable to open the .DNG file.  Will try later to resolve this.
