S110 maximum voltage

Hi,

I have my battery holder where I can put in 3 x AAA batteries rechargeable or non-rechargeable.
If I insert 3 x rechargeable batteries I will get a voltage of around 4.2 V (3 x 1.4 V if fully charged).
If I insert 3 x 'normal' batteries (non-rechargeable) I will get a voltage of around 4.8 V (3 x 1.6 V if new).

I want now to drive my cam with rechargeable batteries and sometimes also with non-rechargeable batteries. (of course never mixed).
Is 4.8 V too much for my S110?
Is there any maximum voltage I have to consider without damaging the camera?

I'm not sure if this can be considered the definitive answer but it does suggest you should be okay with 4.2 to 4.8 volts.

I would be also really interested, if 3 non-rechargeable batteries are working with S110. And also, if S110 works with 5V. This would be a really advantage, because I can use directly my power bank.

For my G1X I have a battery holder for 6 rechargeable batteries. When I use the holder with non-rechargeable batteries, I take 5 and I have one dummy batterie (short-circuit).

Hi,

to answer this question today I sacrificed me and did a test with my two S110. Both S110 are still alive  ::)
I tested both S110 separately with my power supply in 0.1V steps from 3.6V up to 5.2V.

I switched several times the cams on and off, zoomed in and out and so on.
I could not see any problem to drive the cameras with voltage up to 5.2V.
Since I will use 3 x AAA = 4.8V non-rechargeable batteries with max. 1.6V (if new) I think I am on the save side.

But of course this is my personal experience. If you use up to 5.2V you will do it at your own risk!

Thank for this information. I would be to scared, to test it. But now, I feel much better, to use my power bank.

today I tested further, up to 5.6V (!!!) no problem, but here I stop this now.
Camera still alive!

No risk - no fun :D

The question is, how much power loss there is in the cam and can this damage the cam, when the cam run over a long time with this voltage (on time lapse). I’m still thinking to use my cam for a long time with 5V. The S110 is for me a very valuable cam, as long there is no newer cam with CHDK…. OK, you have 2 of them… :D

Hi c_joerg,

I tested also 3.3V and above. This shows the S110s have a wide range of voltage (I tested 3.3V - 5.6V) they work with. I doubt that Canon uses the native voltage coming directly from the batteries. I think they use a voltage regulator to keep a stable voltage if the batterie voltage goes down until it is empty.
If you use 5.0V you are far away from 5.6V I tested. So I think it will work for long term usage as well.
If you don't try you will never find it out ;-)

It would be interesting to know what the various camera temperature sensors monitored by CHDK show spread out over the course of a couple of hours powered on. That might give some indication of potential overheating at the higher voltages.
