@reyalp

I see that the G7X II has a development build.

I believe the G7X II and G1X III both use a DIGIC 7 chipset.

As a non developer, I was wondering if I purchased a G1X III would there be any chance a developer, with time, would be able to ‘port’ the G7X II build to the G1X III, with me being the guinea pig, or would the developer need to have the camera in hand.

The G1X III with CHDK would be an incredible travel camera.

Just asking out of ignorance  ;)

Doing "blind" ports without access to the actual camera is difficult and frustrating in the best of circumstances. Given that digic 7 support is new and experimental in CHDK, it would be harder than older platforms. So while I can't speak for anyone else, I think it's fairly unlikely you will find anyone who wants to attempt a port without physically having the camera.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

What advantage would you see in the G1xIII over an M3/M100?
It is significantly more expensive than my M's. I think it's even heavier. It also has very strong corrections in wide angle.
M100 100a, M3 121a, G9x II (1.00c), 2*G1x (101a,100e), S110 (103a), SX50 (100c), SX230 (101a), S45,

No lenses to carry  ;)

Plus, because potentially it may be possible  :)

The hardest part of the G7X2 port was getting the initial CHDK code to startup reliably. The dual core CPU made the startup code a lot more difficult to get working. Without the camera I don't think I would ever have got it going. It would also not have been possible without the help of others on the forum - particularly srsa_4c. It is currently the only Digic7 port.

A lot would depend on how similar the firmware of the G1X3 is to the G7X2. A blind port might be possible; but without a firmware dump I can't tell how much changed in the 18 months between the camera releases.

CHDK ports:
  sx30is (1.00c, 1.00h, 1.00l, 1.00n & 1.00p)
  g12 (1.00c, 1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  sx130is (1.01d & 1.01f)
  ixus310hs (1.00a & 1.01a)
  sx40hs (1.00d, 1.00g & 1.00i)
  g1x (1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  g5x (1.00c, 1.01a, 1.01b)
  g7x2 (1.01a, 1.01b, 1.10b)

It is significantly more expensive than my M's. I think it's even heavier. It also has very strong corrections in wide angle.

I have a g1xIII.   I do a lot of landscapes, some closeups.  Often in bright light.  So an EVF is a requirement. That rules out the m100.

The reasons why I picked the g1xIII over the m3:
The g1xIII is 0.88lbs with a lens.   The m3 is 0.81lbs, without a lens or external EVF.   So the weight of the m3 plus an external EVF plus a lens plus a larger carrying pouch is significantly more weight than the g1xIII

I am very happy with the g1xIII.   The lens is pretty amazing.  It's small, lightweight.  I'm older and usually hiking more than 10 miles with significant elevation gains so weight is quite important.  Sure, some noticeable distortion at the wide end, but honestly after lens correction it's pretty hard to tell in a final image.

My current problem is exposure control.  The built in metering modes seem to have a mind of their own.

I can put a live histogram up and fiddle with exposure compensation but really, I'd like to just set it for expose to the right, allow it to clip 0.5% of the pixels, and let the camera software choose.  I remembered chdk did that for an older powershot I had which brought me back here investigating if chdk was available for the g1xIII

So, here's another vote for a developer to get a g1xIII.  If I was a zillionaire (I'm not), I'd buy one and send it to a developer!
