Is there a way to take a manually take a picture without opening the shutter? I'd like to try some frame stacking, and being able to write a script to take a dark frame every few shots is a lot less painful than having to stand there periodically covering the lense.

Sorry, no way to do that currently. It's been requested many times before and I guess someone will do it (our current knowledge may or may not be enough to implement it neatly, and in either case it may require some tedious work for each and every camera & fw version).
