I think that EOS-M cameras are restricted to not compete with DSLR cameras.
I did not see here any impressive hacks concerning the the video, unlike ML.
May be it would be done after ML will be ported on Digic 6 cameras.

Maybe.

Conspiracy theories are always fun.

But I expect Canon would rather have an EOS-M sale than risk someone buying a Nikon or Sony product - DSLR or otherwise.  So I stand by my statement that if the camera electronics could do better video, it would be sold that way.

Feel free to dig into the code and try to prove me wrong.

Canon seems to have decided that you cannot remotely control the M3 and M10 Cameras.
via a USB cable using a windows PC and their EOS Utility. (see the attached file)

The (latest) Official Canon Remote Capture options are;

a/ Using the IR RC-6.

b/ Using Canon Camera Connect on an Android Device.

c/ Using Canon Camera Connect on an Apple Device.

H-H

So it's possible that Canon is simply evil and really trying to annoy their paying customers.  Drive as much business away as possible and try hard for bankruptcy.

Or more likely they have learned that very few of their target customers that purchase mid-range prosumer cameras like the M3 and M10  have any interest in controlling their cameras via a USB cable.  You have to admit its a pretty unique shooting situation to be tied to a PC.  Connecting to a mobile phone - which they do support - is another matter!

I expect Canon sees no payback in paying the cost of supporting s/w for USB tethered operations. But conspiracy theories are always  more fun - even when they make no business sense.

I have also ordered an M3 ...

Normally, I make a parameter dump (paramdmp.lua) before I make the first recording.
I would like to check how many recordings have already been made.

Is this counter still in the same position as on the S110 / G1x?
Can I see without making a photo, which firmware the camera has?

I would proceed as follows:
- Using EOSCard to make the SD card bootable.
- Copy the content of CHDK-M3-101a-r32 to the SD card
- Set SD card to the locked position
- Turn on the camera

What happens if the camera does not have firmware 101a?
M100 100a, M3 121a, G9x II (1.00c), 2*G1x (101a,100e), S110 (103a), SX50 (100c), SX230 (101a), S45,

Most likely no.

Yes. See user manual.

It will not start.
I recommend you to make a firmware dump first using the universal dumper

I made firmware dump. While dumping I don’t get any information on screen. That’s different to my other cams.

I got CHDK to run.. :)

It looks like the counter is still there. Attached a dump after 0 shoots and 3 shoots..

Sorry for the totally noob question.  I got CHDK-M3-101a-r32 to run on my M3 (thanks Ant and team!), and I can control the camera though chdkptp.  Plus I see the chdk stuff on the screen, like the battery icon, and of course the startup logo.

However, I cannot enter ALT mode for some reason on the camera.  I read that the Play button is the Alt button, but it doesn't work no matter how short a press I do.  I tried other buttons as well, but no luck.  Can someone help me with this?

Also, somewhat related, the only reason I want to enter the menu mode is to set up the exposure and iso overrides to on, and also to set up a script as the autostart script.  If there is another way to do it without entering the alt menu, like by setting some config on the card maybe, I would rather use that.  My eyes are not great to see the small writing on the screen.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the noob questions.

I am absolutely 100% happy with the progress made so far.  Once I figure out how to do bulb shooting this will make a great little astro camera.  :-)

Thanks again for all the hard work to make this happen.

Try "M-Fn" button to enter ALT mode.

You can set larger fonts in chdk menu.
