On some cameras, yes...

Have a look to camera.h, look for #define CAM_CAN_MUTE_MICROPHONE     1 in the section of your camera, e.g. for the A450 in line 169...

but how disable sound?

AFAIK currently only used to mute sound during zoom; you would need to
modify the CHDK source to allow permanent or configurable mute
