Title: G11 CHDK > 4GB SD Card
Post by: zheng on 01 / October / 2010, 03:28:51
Hi,

I've been trying to get the Canon Hack Dev kit working on my G11 with a 16GB SD card and find the installation instructions a bit...confusing

I've partitioned the card into ~1GB and ~14GB with the 1GB being the viewable drive and placed the bootable file onto it. With that in, the camera loads with the CHDK splash screen and I can access the CHDK menu after pressing the shortcut key. So at this point I'm assuming CHDK is now fully working?

My issue is with the "invisible" 14GB drive that Windows can't see anymore, and therefore I can't place any new scripts onto the larger drive where all the other CHDK folders sit. When I tried to swap the drives through Misc > Swap Partitions, Windows can indeed view it...but then I don't know how to swap it back so that CHDK is again booted automatically on the G11 (at the moment after I swap the drives, put the scripts on, then re-lock and insert the card back into the camera it just gives me the old "Card is locked" message, with no indication that CHDK exists).

I haven't had time to fully test out the drive issue and maybe I missed something absurdly simple but I was just wondering how has everyone else dealt with multiple partitions and CHDK on their G11?

I got this working on my 8GB card. If you download "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition", which is free, you can switch the active partitions back and forth. (http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html (http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html))

So when you want to access the larger partition, make that active with a drive letter (which makes the other partition invisible to Windows) using the partition software. Then you just switch it back to the smaller "boot" partition using the software, making that one active and it gets the drive letter. That worked for me. Someone might have a simpler idea. But, it is not THAT bad to switch back and forth. You only need to switch to that partition when you want to add scripts or get pics off.

I could not get it working any other way.

Just use sdminst.exe from Common_files.zip available here http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm. (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm.)

Usage explained here http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm)

(those pages will be updated in the next few days with a new Release).

@Sundey

That's the exact program I used to partition the SD card in the first place. However when I try to make the secondary(larger) partition active..it makes it active but will not allow me to allocate a Drive letter to it (it goes through the motions but nothing changes at the end). It does take away the letter from the smaller partition in doing so, and is able to reactivate the smaller partition. Any changes to the large partition comes to no avail =(

@microfunguy
I read through the guide you posted and as far as I can tell it does something similar; separate the drive into two partitions, one FAT16 and one FAT32. It doesn't seem to mention whether the second partition is visible or not to the computer? Is the difference between them that both partitions are visible?

Yes, by simply clicking the option to swap partitions.

The first partition is only 2MB in size.

Windows only normally displays the first partition of removable media.

It is possible to use a modified disk driver, I certainly do not recommend this
and if you try it is at your own risk :-

There are several options on how to setup/configure 4G and 8G cards that are mentioned in another posting that might be something you want to try as well. Here is the link: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,5344.msg51806.html#msg51806 (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,5344.msg51806.html#msg51806)

Since I've started using the dual bootable 4G partitions on my 8G SD cards, I've rarely use any of the other configurations (although I still have other configurations setup on extra SD cards that I carry with me). I don't mean to suggest dual 4G bootable partitions is the best solution, only another option. The tutorial on how to setup various SD cards should give you other configuration options you can try out.

Thanks guys for all your input

I realised the problem was I had to switch the partition to the secondary drive on the camera (using CHDK Misc -> switch partition), and use Minitool Partition Wizard to switch it back to the small partition on the PC. It doesn't seem to be able to do both swaps through the wizard, and obviously once the secondary partition becomes primary it is no longer able to boot CHDK on the camera and perform the reverse switch.

A little strange but it all works now! =]

Normally, you can switch back in CHDK by loading manually once with "firm update" and swapping, but for some reason G11 and a few other cameras are not able to load CHDK this way.

I would be interested to know if the cbasic loader http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Canon_Basic/Scripts/Loader (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Canon_Basic/Scripts/Loader) works on the cameras that do not work with firm update.

i split the card into a fat32 partition and a fat16 with chdk on it, made it active and bootable and locked the card. now when i put it in the camera it starts but the display remains black and turns off after a while.

the only difference i could detect is that i´m using a 16gb card do i have to get a 8g card or lower or am i missing something?

Sounds like a wrong CHDK version. Try to install CHDK with STICK: http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/stick/stick.html (http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/stick/stick.html)
