Alright Newbies, do you want a step by step guide, with a video explanation on how to install CHDK? You've got it!

I just posted it to CHDK For Newbies - How To Install - CHDK Wiki (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_For_Newbies_-_How_To_Install).

NOTE to All: The video is up, but not fully (the last few parts got cut off  :'(. I am uploading the not cut off version. The quality is not too great (since I am doing this in a somewhat dark room). I will upload a better version on Saturday, when I can do it in the morning :). If you find ANY errors/suggestions whatsoever, PLEASE post them (even if they are really small). I would like to make this video as easy as possible :)

Nice video! You speak very clearly, which is important for  non native english speakers.

If you are going to redo it, I suggest you mention which cameras need cardtricks in the first place. I mean, your actual video doesn't apply for S3 users. It could cause confusion among newbies.

When it is finished, you can post it in s5users.com forum as well. It will be of great help there. Some people don't use CHDK because its very difficult to install.

I though CardTricks works with any camera...

Yup :) I certainly will. I hope it helps ppl to get CHDK :D. And it seems that even I am learning something from making this video. I finally figured out the thing with version numbers :P

It was one of the rare cases when I did recognize all words from first try. :D
(Heh... I wish me to speak English fluently like adcz... :-[ But I'm afraid it's impossible for me without living in English-speaking country and because I'm already too old for that. Adcz mentioned he knows Russian. Are you from Russia? How long are you living in US?)

Yes, it does. But for VxWorks-based cams it is unnecessary to make SD-card bootable. Therefore it is not needed to format it as FAT16 if you do not want use autoboot feature in future.

Thanks GrAnd :).

I was born in Moscow, Russia, then when I was 3 I moved to the US (now 15, almost 16). I talk a lot of Russian @ home because my mom's horrible in english, and I can write a bit in translit (nada kogdata pogovorit' po irc po translitu :)), even though my spelling is way off. Well I am glad that at least I have one useful quality for CHDK :P

- DL the trunk sources https://tools.assembla.com/chdk/browser/trunk
- unzip to folder of your choice
- in the 'include' subdirectory, search for camera.h
- property #defines for supported cams are in there, look for
CAM_HAS_DRYOS, or sth like that (sorry, no source handy at the moment)

no need for unzipping, my friend. https://tools.assembla.com/chdk/browser/trunk/include/camera.h here you can see camera.h directly :)

thanks whim! That looks handy...I never even knew that site existed O.o. what more is there to CHDK that I don't know :D

this is due to the fact that you havent read "into" the forum entirely, if you know what i'm trying to say. read, read, read :)

edit: by the way, this trac/assembla site also offers a pretty good timeline, you can find the link to it in my sig. these changes you see there are changes the devs implement in the actual code. they are not neccessarily new features, but a lot of them will lead to new features, bugfixes etc. these changes somehow make it into an official build eventually (with an extra announcement), however you can find binaries that already include these changes in grands autobuild server.

One more way how to determine which camera is DryOs-based... :)
For VxWorks-based camera the installation archive contain 2 files: PS.FIR and DISKBOOT.BIN. The DryOS-based - only the second file.
So, look at the list of distributives (http://grandag.nm.ru/hdk/autobuild/download.htm). If the file size is more than 200K - the camera is VxWorks based. It the size of archive is less than 100K - it's DryOS. :)

I was born in Moscow, Russia...

HELLO guys, newbie here :)

I am very excited about using this CHDK - I was originally looking for an SX10 (cause I really like the 28mm feature which S5IS lacks, plus the battery and SD card slot are in two separate places unlike S5IS), but have been griping about the Powershot models (S5IS and above) not having the time lapse feature... until I googled and FOUND this wonderful website.

i've tried S5IS before (bought one for my uncle) and  I dont want to wait for SX10 CHDK (could be waiting for another 6-8 months before CHDK for SX10 surfaces), so I am thinking about getting S5IS again.

However, while checking out the CHDK FAQ, I saw the following note:
FAQ - CHDK Wiki (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._Does_using_the_CHDK_program_void_your_warranty.3F)

"Many believe that using the CHDK does not harm your warranty, since it is said to be loaded into the memory only temporarily (turn off the cam and it's gone completely) and that it leaves the original camera firmware untouched."

How would I use CHDK for my S5IS given the following:

(a) I understand after loading the CHDK into an SD card, the SD card has to be write-protected

(b) I'll need to swap to another SD card when taking pictures but S5IS has this idiotic feature of having both the batteries and the SD card slots in one compartment, so opening the compartment will turn off the camera i.e., wiping out the CHDK  :(

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry guys, I saw this following statement on the same FAQ CHDK Wiki page:

"You will have to write-protect your SD card everytime you want to use CHDK, but this will still allow you to take pictures. "

I read further and found that CHDK is good for FAT16 - and FAT16 works for up to 4GB SD cards only (I say SD since S5IS uses SD cards :D).  Then I poked around further and found THIS page :

MIND - FIELDS: careful where you stand: Canon S5 IS CHDK hack step-by-step tutorial (http://mind-fields-ahead.blogspot.com/2008/04/canon-s5-is-chdk-hack-step-by-step.html)

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried those steps for their S5IS CHDK card (8GB and above)?

Hello punsoca, welcome in the CHDK forum !

The 'write protection' is only a software thing, with CHDK your camera CAN write as normal to the card. You can also prepare a card reader hardware to ignore the write protection, this way you can always use your card locked, in the camera and in your card reader... (Modify a card reader (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,1664.0.html))

As many other cameras the S5 supports the 'multi partition support', this means: SDHC cards with a capacity > 4GB can be used.

With MS Windows you can handle such a card in 2 ways (Windows only shows one partition for SD cards in a card reader):

here Autoboot with 8GB and HDHacker Possibillity (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,255.0.html) is a large thread that kind of describes what various
people have tried to get support for large cards (including the method used in your link)

hope that helps

thank you thank you guys!  Now I get it :)

Next step - find a store that actually sells S5IS at a decent price.  I just checked Circuit City here in my area and they are selling it for $349.99.  I asked the store clerk and he said to wait for 2-3 months and there might be a better deal.

I totally missed the OfficeMax sale from last Memorial weekend!   But then I only learned about CHDK now.

Am so totally looking forward to use the Intervalometer (time lapse) script.

Speaking of time lapse - have you guys used the Time Bandit for S5IS?  I know the concept is the same as the Intervalometer but with a difference - heard that Time Bandit can group the shots together into a mini-AVI movie file, is that true?

Again thanks so much for the warm welcome and generosity (in sharing)!

...heard that Time Bandit can group the shots together into a mini-AVI movie file, is that true?
No, that's NOT true, it's not possible to create the movie in the camera, you have to create it outside, e.g. on your PC with VirtualDub or a similar sofware.

...I forgot to select true letter G for the card, and sellected C drive Die !!
That's VERY bad...but i'm sure, you know that NOW  ;)

The bootable.exe for CHDK writes into the first 512 bytes of the medium, this area is called "boot sector", Master Boot Record MBR on x86 architecture. I think the winbootabel.exe should do the same, only from a Windows GUI - if you mean the tool from the russian forum (i never used it by myself).
You could only access your drive c: when the MBR contains a vaild partition table.

If you don't have a backup of your harddiscs boot sector (i don't think you have that), you can try to write a new MBR to your disc, but first stop and read this:

If the files on your drive are really important you can give it to a data recovery company,
they could normally recover most or all of your files, but you'll pay money for it !  Wikipedia: Data Recovery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_recovery)

...if you want to try it by yourself, don't forget:

All actions can destroy all your data, after that a data recovery specialist can't help you anymore !!!

So - if you're REALLY sure that you want to try to repair it by yourself:
- boot your system from a MS Windows XP installation CD
- select "r" ("Recovery console")
- select your drive, your Windows installation & insert your administrator password
- on the recovery console you can get a list of all commands with   help
- you can use  diskpart  to have a look to the partition table (but do not try to change something there !)

On the prompt of the recovery console call each of the following commands, read & confirm the messages...

fixmbr c:
fixboot c:

Then type exitand your system will shutdown...with some luck it starts up again, otherwise you can try other ways to recover your data, e.g. with a Linux Live CD or a recovery software...

You can also use a Windows PE system (a Windows system running from CD), e.g. made with BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/)

Good luck !

*EDIT: a free & powerful data & partition recovery tool is TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk), could also be helpful...

Hi

I am struggling to try to figure out how to do time lapse photography with a Canon A620 for a demolition and construction project my company is doing (starting Tuesday!)  I am seeing all of this stuff with Canon Hacker software, but this stuff seems way out of my league.  Can any one send me to a step by step instructs or a simple script to do this?  NO experience on my end!

Hi Everyone,
I found the CHDK site awhile ago but was a bit scared of downloading it.  Finally after much searching for information about it I decided to forge ahead.  I am so glad I did as it works great on my sx10is.  Now I just have to learn how to use it.
Thanks for this forum as I am sure I will be using often.

Continuous shooting means shoot pictures for as long as you hold the button down. If this is what you mean, then it is supported in the camera firmware without need for CHDK. Consult your camera manual.

CHDK doesn't alter Canon's menus or Canon's on-screen display. To get past Canon's limitations, go to CHDK menu -> extra photo operations -> shutter speed override / aperture override or use a suitable script.

Post by: Astrobob on 29 / September / 2010, 22:32:33
Hello fellows,

I am new to CHDK. I did manage to install CHDK on my SD & run it manually but couldn't figure out how to take an exposure in manual mode longer than the default 15 sec of canon. I am in a testing phase to check CHDK's capabilities specially when it comes to long exposures & dark subtraction as I am a humble amateur astronomer < www.astrobob.tk (http://www.astrobob.tk) >  & astrophotographer < http://www.flickr.com/photos/astrobob (http://www.flickr.com/photos/astrobob) >

In Alt mode I entered to the "Extra Photo Operations" & edited:

Override shutter speed: 32
value factor: 1
shutter speed enum type: Ev step

& tried it in each of the 3 modes for "Disable Overrides", that is in "Disable", "On" & "Off"

but it never took an image with an exposure greater than 15 seconds  :-X

any help please ?

thanks in advance

Hello & welcome, Astrobob !

Quote
I want to be able to use my camera to take night shots (very long exposures) witn no flash.
* disable (close) the flash
* adjust the Canon camera settings, e.g. like this:
P mode, fix ISO (100 or 200), select the longest available Canon exposure time (15 seconds)

Now, set up the CHDK overrides:
You can either choose one of the values in Override shutter speed - or you can use this setting in combination with the next menu item, the Value factor, for this set Shutterspeed enum type to [Factor]...

Sample:
Override shutter speed  [64]
  Value factor          [1]
Shutterspeed enum type  [Factor]

gives you 64 x 1 = 64 s exposure time.

The Canon OSD don't know anything about the CHDK overrides, it only shows values from the internal Canon list,
so on exposure times beyond the Canon limit of 15s the Canon OSD will always show "15s"...

You can enable the additional CHDK OSD values from the OSD (Misc...) menu to see the "real" override values...

Hi Guys,
I am new for CHDK. I have SX20 IS & tried to check the firmware as per the instruction given on the CHDK site. I got below details from the camera.
P-ID:31E4 PAL D
version is 1.00F ,
Firmware Ver: GM1.00F
E18
Jun 15 2009 15:28:22

Here instead of "No Error" i am getting E18 just want to know what does this number means. Is there any problem or I am doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for helping me.
Title: Re: CHDK what? Help me, I'm a newbie!
Post by: whim on 01 / October / 2010, 11:39:29
Hi Manit708,

Welcome to the forum !

E18 means "zoom lens error", and is usually caused by the user accidentally turning on
the camera: if the lens motion is obstructed by for instance a hand, or the carrying case.
The camera always remembers the last error, so this could have happened long ago;
in short, no reason to worry, unless of course your lens behaves abnormally ...

hope that helps,

wim

PS Hint: type "E18 error" in the search box at the top of the page for more info

Why wouldn't it work if I choose something other than [Factor] ? I dont have my cam at hand to check what it is , but I think its [Ev step] or something as indicated in the manual.

Quote
The Canon OSD don't know anything about the CHDK overrides, it only shows values from the internal Canon list,
so on exposure times beyond the Canon limit of 15s the Canon OSD will always show "15s"...

aha
Quote
You can enable the additional CHDK OSD values from the OSD (Misc...) menu to see the "real" override values...

Regarding this, would the image I take with an exposure above 15 sec be embedded within the metadata of the image ? When I checked the details of a 64 sec image (in playback mode) i took within G9 it shows an exposure 15 sec. Will this also be in the metadata. This would make it a pain to take countless image a night in the dark & cold withouht being able to check what the real settings were when I took this or that image. It will also coz lots of issues when downloading & processing the images. Any tips/suggestions/ in this regard ?

Moreover, is it possible to speed up that saving of images time ? The time the cam takes to process & save the image. In astrophotography, you miss lots of stuff during this time (e.g.; if i am taking a series of images of a celestial event & need the nearly the same with different settings to then use in processing, the time for waiting for the cam would make it harder & harder the greater the exposure is).

Why the P mode ? What if I need to use different ISO ?
Then use different settings. e.g. means example. You probably want to use P mode (assuming your camera doesn't have M) because it lets you control the most settings in the canon firmware.

Depends on the camera and which part of the meta data you are looking at. The canon "maker notes" are generally more reliable than the regular exif.

If you are shooting using a script, you can log the values your script set.

The actual saving time cannot be changed, this is obviously a hardware limit. On some cameras the "iso3200" or other high iso mode has shorter saving time, but resolution is reduced. If you mean the canon dark frame subtraction (long "busy" screen after shooting a long exposure) this can be controlled as fe50 described.

In addition to @reyalp's info, there is something else you may want to check. I ran benchmarks & real world tests on the SDHC class of cards I was using and found that for the SX20 a class 4 improved my times moderately. You may want to test using a higher class of SDHC card to see if it will reduce your times as well. Well my Canon G9 does have a manual mode M & it's the mode i have been using to do astrophotography.

I didn't (up to my knowledge) use any script but the default one, which runs along with CHDK. I am still clumsy about using CHDK & the menus but slowly learning. I did a bit of shallow reading about scripts in CHDK but havent totally grasped the idea of how to use it or how to load them onto the card. Anyways, for time being, I would like to make sure that the basics I need (i.e.; longer exposures & exif & metadata are possible) without any backdraws. I still can't understand why CHDK or the cam would not (by default) register the correct exif like the exposure ?!

Aha. well its not just about the dark frame subtraction. I tried both on & off for the subtraction with no big saving time difference, up to what i recall.

thx SkyWalker9. I will recheck your post sometime later. Its interesting, though I will currently stick to learning CHDK & how to use scripts, before I move on. But one question I have is: do the new types of cards like extreme work on cam's that haven't been certified for its use, maybe coz the cam was manufactured before this new card type was introduced ?

Just recalled: in a previous post i mentioned about reading about something that makes the cam work on its self after setting it to do so. The "something" I meant was the "Intervalometer": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intervalometer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intervalometer). CHDK is mentioned in the 2 lines under Photography.

thx

Before I tried the new cards in my SX20 I searched to see if anyone else had tested in the SX20, but I didn't find any postings, so I just took a chance and tested on my SX20 and found that they worked.

I've been VERY pleased with the faster cards because I shoot almost exclusively using DNG enabled - in many cases, the Canon JPGs can really be off even when using the other modes such as Manual. I find that the DNG results are almost always perfect. Although the cards are more expensive, the faster cards shortern the times between shots as well as save a lot of time later when transferring to PC.

As I said before: Depends on the camera and which part of the meta data you are looking at. The canon "maker notes" are generally more reliable than the regular exif. You won't find this in windows file properties, but some imaging programs and exif tools will show it to you. Google is your friend.

Because CH (http://catb.org/jargon/html/H/hack.html)DK is a hack. When you are twiddling the guts of a completely undocumented system, you don't always have the luxury of doing exactly what you want.

Quote
Aha. well its not just about the dark frame subtraction. I tried both on & off for the subtraction with no big saving time difference, up to what i recall.
If dark frame subtracton is enabled, the exposure will take exactly 2x as long as normal, with the camera displaying "busy" for the second half.

I suggest the scripting sections of the forum and wiki. It sounds like you want an intervalometer.

Looks like amp glow (google it). There is a reason canon doesn't offer 64 sec exposures. Dark frame subtraction should reduce this. Stray light (from LEDs on the camera etc) could also give this effect, but lots of amp glow is expected at 64 sec.

I have a Canon SX200 IS with 1.00D Firmware. And loaded "sx200is-100d-0.9.9-955-full".
But it says 100C in the pop up image at the startup.

Is this normal or is something wrong?

I got the answer to the showing 100C problem from here :  :)
Also these versions both use the same CHDK code, when you load 1.00d CHDK it reports as 1.00c.
This is because only 1.00c is coded and built but a copy is then renamed as 1.00d

But there are some issues with the CHDK which are,

1) Appearing green ghosting when the shutter is half pressed  :o**** Of which I m most concerned*****  :o

2) and zooming out all the way back automatically sometimes when shooting videos.

I m going to stop using the CHDK unless someone say it's normal for the current version of CHDK for SX200 IS or give a link to a more stable version.  :(

Thank you for your help.

A blue or pinkish glow in the image is common with different CCD and CMOS imagers when taking long exposures. You can remove those types of artifacts with image stacking and post-processed dark frame subtraction.

You may want to look into shooting a series of raw images (DNG) with CHDK and converting them on your desktop computer into either uncompressed FITS or TIFF files and then doing stacking and image processing to enhance the clarity and detail. If you have the time to learn the free astronomy software program IRIS (http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/us/iris/iris.htm), it does a good job processing astro-photographs.

Newer versions of Adobe Photoshop can also perform image stacking and alignment.

Also, If you aren't using an autoguider you are usually limited to about 30 seconds before the sky's rotation causes noticeable star trail streaks in astrophotos. If you are on a low budget, a home made barn door tracker can work. There are many pages like this one that discuss how to make simple autoguiders. (http://www.astronomyboy.com/barndoor/)

A simple script like this one will act as an intervalometer and continuously shoot photos. Just save it in a plain text file in your /CHDK/SCRIPTS folder and give it a name like RAPID.BAS

Code: [Select]
@title Rapid Photo v2
while 1
  press "shoot_full"
  release "shoot_full"
wend

end

Good Luck!

OK, I am an absolute noob here so please go easy on me.

My main problem is not knowing how to partition my SDHC 8Gb card. I have seen numerous posts about it but they all seem to be determined to baffle one with technical terminology, or assume that the person doing the partitioning knows how to do it.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I am fairly intelligent but not too PC literate. I can pick things up fairly quickly once shown how a thing is done.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hello & welcome, mickrj !

My main problem is not knowing how to partition my SDHC 8Gb card.
Partitioning is only needed when you want to start CHDK automatically on power-on or when your camera does not support the manual loading method (with the "Firmware Update" menu item from the Canon menu).

You can do the partitioning with the SDMInstaller tool for Windows, read more here:
* http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/quick.htm) (SDM homepage)
* http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm) (SDM downloads, the SDMInstaller is included in the "common_files.zip" archive)

If manual loading is supported you can also do the partitioning with CHDK on the camera:
* http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2468.msg36022.html#msg36022 (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2468.msg36022.html#msg36022)

Since MS Windows only let you access the first partition, there are several ways to swap partitions:
* http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2468.msg30911.html#msg30911 (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2468.msg30911.html#msg30911)

I updated a tutorial that I created a while back on how to setup various sizes of SDHC cards and install CHDK. Most of the instructions were from the sources mentioned by fe50. The tutorial includes photos during the process to make it easier to understand. I uploaded the turorial (PDF) to a file sharing site (hotfile.com) in order for you to download. Just use the "Regular Download". Good luck!

Hello,

I want to be able to run a script from my computer and be able to read txt files in real time from my camera (or print straight to files on my PC). Basically, I need real-time communication between my camera and PC.

Is there a way to send information/commands through USB in real time? Can this be done using C/Matlab/etc?

Thank you!

I am trying to download CHDK, however the links to the server http://mighty-hoernsche.de/ (http://mighty-hoernsche.de/) appear to be broken.

Is this server down? No longer active?

Is there an alternative mirror server where the CHDK software can be downloaded from?

Thanks

The server seems to be down at the moment.

Alternatively, you can test CHDK-DE or SDM. CHDK-DE is quite identical with CHDK. SDM has the basic features of CHDK with some extensions for stereo imaging.

Autobuild CHDK-DE (http://forum.chdk-treff.de/download.php)

Download SDM (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm)

Hello!

I have found CHDK so usefull and my creativity is now so less restricted on my G12 from "factory settings" camera mode  :D
Thanks a lot!

Now a bunch of (maybe) silly questions:

My 32GB card is now formatted into 2 partitions (according to some info I found to auto-load CHDK). In some situations (e.g. turning on the camera with display closed) camera only recognize (and enables saving) the tiny little partition and runs out of space in no more than 2 or 3 shots. Questions as follows: Is it common to have CHDK disabled whenever camera is turned on with LCD closed or memory card unlocked? When CHDK is disabled, I will never be able to read&write to second (large) card partition? Do I have to always open LCD to turn on the camera using this partitioned memory card?

When choosing a filetype either in camera and CHDK settings, I found out that CHDK RAW format for G12 is unknown to Bibble 5 software, and I am at the moment using Canon internal RAW (CR2 file extension) nocely with this tool. What I am in doubt is that this may not probably be the fastest option as internal Canon JPG (appearently shoots at higher FPS), and maybe CHDK RAW format may be even faster. Any hints on this subject, what is fastest, how to set it (either in Canon and CHDK settings menu) and how to operate/convert this G12 CHDK RAW filetype under linux will be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot!!

LCD shouldn't matter.

Which one the camera sees without CHDK depends on which on is "active" (technically which one is listed first in the partition table) You can use the "swap partitions" function in CHDK to change this, but if you make the large partition active, CHDK will not autoboot. To get back, you'll need to load CHDK manually and use swap partitions again.

I would be surprised if Canon raw was slower than CHDK raw. You can find information about CHDK Raw format here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Raw (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Raw)

Unzip the full CHDK package to the root of your SD card, start the camera in playback mode (!) & the "Firmware Update" menu item should be visible from the Canon menu...

Hi folks,

yes I'm a newbe with a question!
It's all about the Canon G15 which I maybe like to buy.
Will CHDK make it possible to manual set shutter speed, aperture, ISO, an the focus in the videographymode?
This is the only reason why i don't like the G15. You can set nearly everything manually except in the Moviemode...
I didn't found the answer in the Wiki.

Thank you!

Felix

There is an experimental script which offers control over shutter speed, ISO and aperture, but
- it doesn't appear to work for some people
- it can make the camera unstable (i.e. it can crash the camera, which means you lose the unfinished footage)
- it may need to be adjusted to work on newer cameras
So, if you need something that "production-ready", "just works" or "reliable", this is not it.

Hi All,
I have an A610 with CHDK from several years ago. I actually use it mainly for the battery and file size indicators as well as for video zooming, so I am a total newbie.
I know I may sound dumb but recently my wife must have changed something by accident and every time after a shot the blue PRINT LED comes on for a couple of seconds.
What is it and how can I eliminate it?
Thanks.

I know I may sound dumb but recently my wife must have changed something by accident and every time after a shot the blue PRINT LED comes on for a couple of seconds.  What is it and how can I eliminate it?
Have you also noticed your SD card filling up faster? You have likely enabled saving RAW/DNG images.  Those take a few second to store to the SD card and take up a lot of space.  There is an annoying CHDK key shortcut that is really easy to trigger accidentally that can cause this. Go into the CHDK RAW menu and disable saving RAW.

I have an A610 with CHDK from several years ago. I actually use it mainly for the battery and file size indicators as well as for video zooming, so I am a total newbie.

My guess would be that the cam now saves RAW files. You're probably somewhat familiar with the CHDK menu - this setting is RAW (digital negative) -> Save RAW in recent CHDK (you might be using something much older, so the menu can be a bit different).
If you need a reminder, the manual might help: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_1.3.0_User_Manual

Thanks but that's not it. All the pictures I took yesterday and today are still JPG.
Any other ideas, please?

The camera saves JPG + RAW/DNG when the RAW option is on. The blue LED is an optical control for saving the RAW files. You find the RAW files in DCIM/CANON100 or in the same dir as the JPGs depending on settings.

Go into the CHDK ALT mode by short pressing the print key. Press MENU. Navigate to the RAW menu and press SET.  Disable the first entry (Save Raw) with SET. Leave the menu with MENU. And Leave also the ALT mode with the print key.

Further to msl's comments, you will most likely not be able to see those RAW files if you are using a USB cable to connect your camera to your PC and loading pictures that way.  You need to put your SD card into a card reader on your PC to see them.

Regardless,  as everyone has posted so far,  you need to go into the CHDK menus and disable the Save RAW option.    If you find that Save RAW is disabled and you still get the blue light & delay please report back.  You have a true mystery for us to worry about.

Of course, you were right.
I was looking for RAW files in the same directory as the latest JPG's while they were in CANON100.
Thanks for your help.

fyi ... there is a option available in the CHDK RAW menu that let's you select the folder where the RAW/DNG files are saved.

It's the  RAW File Folder [withJPG]  menu item.  You can have them saved with the JPG's or in directories A/RAW or A/DCIM

Thanks.
By the way, what software do you guys use to view or edit RAW files?

That depends on what PC type you are using.  There is a lot of useful info here :  CHDK Links : Raw & DNG (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_Links#RAW_.26_DNG_Images).  Some might be a bit obsolete though.

It looks like FastStone Image Viewer opens CRW without problems.
This is the first time I am actually looking at RAW files from my camera and FastStone Image Viewer shows they are 1308x980 while the same JPG's are 2592x1944. Why is that?

This is probably a setting in FastStone to show reduced resolution. FWIW, to get good results from RAW, you generally need to use a raw processing program made for photography (like raw therapee, lightroom etc.) rather than a general purpose image viewer.

Thanks.
Indeed, all these files can also be viewed as 2616x1960.

What camera?
AFAIK, no PowerShot supports HDMI output in shooting mode.
The best you could get is analog video - if your cam supports it. Download the manual from Canon's support page and see what it says about connecting a TV.

Ok, thank you very much. I own Powershot SX500 IS and I thought it's just a  software problem.

Hello! Newbie here. I have a Canon M100 and I know it’s not listed but from what I can tell by lurking someone has ported a build. One of the reasons that I cam here was to get an update to stop my M100 from turning off during live view and to have clean hdmi and remove the AF box. My question is what build should I be using? Thanks I’m advance.

There is no working CHDK build for M100. There is a Canon Basic script for clean HDMI, in this thread https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=13489.msg140429#msg140429

Thank you for the link. So do how do I get that script onto the camera? Do I paste that into a text file and put in on the root of my SD card? I watched a video where this guy downloaded a zip for his camera. As we know there's no such file for the M100. I am tech savvy and I've rooted iphones and sideloaded Android OS onto WebOs tablets using nightly and stable builds but I'm a little lost here. Thanks in advance.

Wait, is it the M10 build that I would download and replace the script with the one that you linked?

No, the M10 is a totally different camera. There is NO CHDK for M100. To use the script, you need to follow the instructions for Canon Basic scripts, not CHDK. They are linked in the clean overlays thread https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=13489.msg140429#msg140429

The video you watched is only for installing a valid CHDK distribution zip file on a camera that supports it. As @reyalp says, the M100 is not one of those cameras. Follow the process he outlines instead.
