has anybody in the UK tried this from maplins
   Maplin > Infrared Remote Control
 . This would work out cheap and EASIER and SMALLER than hacking a remote doorbell unit?

yes it did. but as the product says over a short distance, and that distance was about 1 meter. :(
it was powered by 2 9V batteries, but I replaced the receiver batteries with 4 1.2V rechargables and it worked. And no it was still only a meter or so when powered by the 2 9V batteries.
