I have loaded chdk and all looks well.  I can see the files on chdk file explorer, but when I connect via usb I get an error when I try to create a new folder in the root.  (The new folder could not be created in this location.  The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected"

The software can write to the card, but I cannot via usb... any ideas?

Hello & welcome, tyguy123 !

Access to the SD card's filesystem through USB is limited by Canon, the transfer protocol used for this (PTP, Picture Transfer Protocol) is limited to a few file types & operations.
The behaviour differs between the camera models, but mostly operations like creating / moving folders are not supported...use a card reader instead.
