Is the image three stops darker than at 1/1000 sec ?

Haven't done any controlled tests yet; but images get progressively darker at 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/8000 and 1/16000. 1/8000 is perhaps 2/3rds of a stop darker the 1/4000. 1/16000 is about 1/3rd stop darker than 1/8000 and I can't see any difference beyond 1/16000.

Regards,
Phil.
Phil,
What about longer shutter speeds like 30 sec? did you try that?

How did you get the Firmware Version? I put the file ver.req in the root of the sd-card, started in playback mode and pressed the func/set key together with the disp key. Nothing happens?!
The sx30is is about 10 days old, did they change something?

Instructions are here - http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._How_can_I_get_the_original_firmware_version_number_of_my_camera.3F

You may need to create both the ver.req and vers.req files.
Also you have to start the camera in play mode using the play/review button on the back. Starting in record mode and switching to play mode won't work.

If that still doesn't work there's a link to a program that can extract the version from an image (in Windows).

Phil, thanks for your really fast answer. Of course i read the linked instructions and i'm a little bit experienced with it, because i also play with a sx200is and chdk.
In the next step i will try the vers.req tip and than i will take a look into the exif with the software. But if i understand the software in the right way, it analyses the exif and compares the datas with an excisting database.  If that is right, i am afraid, that theese exif-datas are not present in the database at this time, because the sx30 is too new. Let's see and thanks again.

Try my ACID program - take a picture and drop it on ACID - it will tell you the firmware version (I just tried it on an SX30 test image from the web). See http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html

strange:
First i copied the vers.req to the card...nothing. Than i tried the tool from zeno. Acid shows 100h.
Then i deleted ver.req and vers.req on the cardcompletly and made 2 brand new files with echo > in the DOS Window. Switching on the SX30IS and voila: Version GM1.00H ! I don't understand why the first try didn't work. Maybe the Editor in W7 generated wrong files?
Zeno, thanks a lot for your great tool and Phil thanks also for your support. Now i'm going to test your Beta  :xmas

The ver.req method sometimes seems to requires there to be at least one image on the card.

Maybe the Editor in W7 generated wrong files?
With the Windows default settings (hidden filename extension for known file types) most probablyver.req.txt / vers.req.txt ;)
