Help getting Dataghost's CHDK onto S5IS? (Windows XP, S5IS 1.01b)

I made the SD card bootable using Windows Method #2 on the wiki (bootable.zip), since S5IS does not have a PS.FIR yet.  Dropped DISKBOOT.BIN onto the card and locked it. Now what? My camera doesn't show anything different in the Menu (started in Playback mode).

I'm using my work computer since it has a card reader -- my Linux computer at home does not.

Perhaps my SD card is not actually bootable (maybe bootable.exe failed silently)? Are there any other tips?

Your card has to be formatted in FAT12 or FAT16 for booting to work, which means that it cannot be be larger than 4GB (you didn't mention the size or partition layout). You *can* use it on bigger cards, in order to do that you have to create a small (32MB) FAT12/FAT16 partition, make that bootable and add a large (remaining space on the card) FAT32 partition for storing pictures, etc on. CHDK will automatically see your partition layout and use the big partition for pictures/movies. The drawback is that it's a pain to read pictures off the card using this method with Windows (unless you keep the card inside the camera). It's very easy on Linux, though, you might want to consider that. Additional information on this is available in this thread: Autoboot with 8GB and HDHacker Possibillity

That worked, Dataghost! I never checked to see if my card was FAT32 -- it was.

I'll update the wiki.

I have an S5IS and found the instructions below to load the CHDK onto the SD card:

Quote
Q. There's no PS.FIR file in the CHDK download for my camera. What do I do?
A. This works for the new camera models, based on DryOS (such as A720IS, A650IS):

Make the SD memory card bootable. Read these instructions how to do it.
Copy the BOOTDISK.BIN file to the root directory of the SD card.
Write protect the memory card (Lock setting)

My question is this - if I write protect the memory card, how on earth can I save photos onto the memory card?
Sorry about the noobie question!!

Sounds weird, doesn't it? Well, the "lock" on an SD card doesn't actually do anything. It's a hint to the reading/writing device (camera or card-reader) that the card should not be written to.

In short, CHDK tells the camera to ignore the lock. :-)

A great big thank you to Dataghost and all others for getting this done.

Since I own an S5 with the 101b firmware, I downloaded the new S5 build and gave it a quick try.  There is a lot of learning yet to be done to test out the various features it adds to this already very fine camera.

My first try was to produce a raw image.  Managed to shoot and save two images.  First problem was that the Canon Zoombrowser cannot download raw images from the camera, so I needed to tale out the SD card and download from a card reader.  Once the images were in the computer, tried to open them with Zoombrowser again using the Tools -> Raw selection, and again the raw files were not recognized.

Then I tried with my photo editor (Corel Paintshop Pro X2) and found that it does not recognize the raw files either even though they claim compatability with CRW file formats.

So I dug through the Wiki and downloaded the DNG2PS conversion utility, but that does not recognize the CRW files either.  So I will stop here for now.

Dataghost, is there someting unique about the S5 produced CRW file?  And have you tried any raw file shots yet?

Thanks again.

Almost. Only one thing is missing, you should make the card bootable
by running 'bootable.exe x:' with the card in your card reader (where x is the drive it is recognized as)

search for bootable.exe on the forum, or use this Windows utility to do that: zSHARE - cardtricks115.exe

(just to make sure: do this before sliding the write-protect to ON)
