Samsung 840 EVO SSD performance issue & fix

Not CHDK related; but I though I'd share this in case anyone else is affected.

There is a pretty serious performance issue with Samsung 840 EVO SSD drives, that causes significant read slowdown as the data on the drive ages.

Samsung have release a tool to update the firmware and restore the drive performance (look for the performance restoration software section):
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/us/html/support/downloads.html

It's Windows only at the moment and the drive has to be formatted as NTFS. The drive has to be direct connected to the PC (it won't detect in a USB enclosure).

There is a risk of data loss, so make sure you have a complete backup first.

Before the fix, my 1TB drive took over 5 hours to do a complete MD5 checksum of all 78000+ files.
After the fix the same operation took about 20 minutes.

It took a few hours to run the fix (not sure exactly how long as I gave up waiting and went to bed).

Phil.

It may pay expanding this thread to include other SSD’s.

I Googled for the Samsung 840 EVO SSD slow down issue.

While Samsung have acknowledged SSD slowdown, my interpretation of the information posted on the following sites is, given time the SSD performance issue may affect all SSD’s regardless of manufacture.

My interpretation is SSD manufacturer’s use memory and controller chips manufactured by others. In the process they take short cuts to reduce manufacturing costs.

The last site contains a download link to SSDReadSpeedTester2.04.zip. According to the reports running the program may confirm whether other SSD’s are experiencing similar issues and slowing down.

Not completely unrelated to CHDK.  If you do enough builds of the current trunk during development,  you likely flog the heck out of your SSD a lot more than the average Facebook user.
Ported :   A1200    SD940   G10    Powershot N    G16

Quite possibly others will have like issues; but my understanding is this is a specific firmware bug identified (and fixed) in the 840 EVO.
