Last year, I completed a nine month time-lapse of an apple tree.
The camera box was at ground level, pointing upwards at 45 degrees towards the sky.
I built a 600mm deep open-ended enclosure around and in front of the box.
Despite really bad weather, there was rarely any rain drops on the plain glass filter fitted to the box.

Would you have any photos of the rig? I need the widest angle I can get, so I can't obstruct the lens too much.
I assume it's this :

The "rain shield" seems like a really good idea for keeping most of the water off the filter

I had forgotten  I had posted that.

No, it is not suitable for pointing upwards.

I did use it in a downward facing situation.

The apple tree camera is still in place.

If it is not raining 'tomorrow' I will take a photo of it.

I also did a timelapse of a laburnum tree, again with an upward facing camera.

The 'tent' around the camera was very large and because of the more open location it did occasionally get quite wet.

Here you are, it is not 600mm deep, nearer 300mm.

I should point out there is a very tall hedge behind and shrubs to left and right.
In other words, it is in a sheltered location.

The enclosure seen above does is not sealed with an optical filter but because it was used pointing downwards no rain got in.

When taking this photo I noticed some snowdrops have already opened so tomorrow I will setup a timelapse box.

Also time to order four more lead-acid batteries (I have six) and try to obtain more cameras that I have used previously.

There will be just so much happening come the Spring.

Looks like a good shelter indeed. I'm having a lot of off-the-ground situations so shelter is a little bit more difficult. I'll have to see what I can fabricate onto the box itself without obstructing the wide angle view. Thanks for sharing!

In April, I want to return to a woodland site where I did a month-long timelapse last year.

This time, the cameras will be more easily seen, so for the modest cost I will see if these can be adapted to provide both weather protection and hide their real use :-

How does that work, do the sparrows keep the camera warm, or vice versa.  :P

Just kidding, that is actually a very good idea for hiding the camera in plain sight. I presume your filter will be in the entrance hole, and the box weatherproofed from the inside.

I ordered these instead :-

I have also obtained my seventh time-lapse camera.

Have not decided if there will be a filter.

Surely it is weatherproof ?

Anyway, first timelapse of 2014 is running, filming snowdrops.
A few days earlier would have been better when no hint of flowering visible.

I finally took the time to get a shot of my waterproof box timelapse setup. I'm thinking of making an extension which can hold batteries in case of a situation where I cannot provide outlet power.

:D I like it.. particularly the "safety harness" (bit of string) to stop it falling on unsuspecting passers by.

Any chance of sharing a few of the results?

How "weather proof" has it proved to be?

How did you get on with sealing the filter hood, or did you just use friction (which seems to work reasonably well, even in not so sunny Scotland)?

Just starting to build a total of eight timelapse enclosures and incorporating some new design features.

This season, the cameras will turn on for just eight hours a day.
that means a 6V 12Ah battery should last three weeks before changing.

I may visit the locations more often than that just to check for any problems.

The power button will be permanently depressed.
The attached image shows a way of doing this.

The 3mm thick pvc channel has just enough give to open up and locate two pads on the channel inner surfaces into the viewfinder front and rear windows.

A 3mm screw presses the shutter button.
