Sorry for the delay in response.

<quote>When you half press the shutter does the Canon selected shutter speed (bottom of the LCD) change to 30 seconds?

Phil.</quote>

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Yes, I currently have a two-minute override configured, but 15 seconds appears at the bottom of the LCD.

It's a PowerShot SX40HS
Firmware Ver. GM100G(1.0.0.0)
AdjVer .010.008

Build: Sept 9 2011 8:50:44

Tried both CHDK v 1.1 and 1.2, making sure each time to get the correct build for my firmware.

I tried overriding other things like aperture with no success.

- Eric

All overrides work correctly on my sx40 which is also 1.00g.

A build from Sep 2011 is very old - try downloading the latest 1.2 build onto a clean SD card.

Phil.

Sir, can you please send me a copy of the CHDK you are using? Failing that, please send me a link to the CHDK release I should be using. I believe that I'm using the correct version, but that wouldn't be the first time I've screwed up ;) my email addresss is harrelson,eric@gmail.com. Reverse the values on either side of the comma to get my real email address.

That's close, but what I was hoping for was a direct link to the exact version you're using.

I'm currently uploading a video that shows me resetting the camera's settings, then configuring CHDK to override TV to a one-minute shutter. I'm hoping this will shed some light on the subject.

Its the middle of the night in Australia so philmoz is likely asleep.  I think its safe to say he would be using the latest version - although probably from the development trunk :   http://mighty-hoernsche.de/trunk/

Good idea.  I noticed that you posted earlier about trying to do this with the camera in "M" mode.  That might be the problem - what happens if you use the CHDK override while the camera is in "P" mode?

I'm also using the latest version of 1.2, as was suggested previously. I was just trying to use precisely the same version of CHDK, since his SX40 is playing nice. I'd REALLY love to see him send me a ZIP of his SD card.

I just tried using P mode. The canon setting was 15", and the CHDK override was 1 minute. I ended up with a 1-second (wtf?) shutter. Strange indeed, but might shed some light.

Would it be relevant that I can't get the flash to fire, regardless of setting?

I really don't think that will make any difference.

Strange - the obvious question is did you set the CHDK override value correctly?

Does it work without CHDK loaded?

Helpful but all in "M" mode unfortunately.  Can you shoot a shorter one showing what happens in "P" mode?  (and the radio off in the background ;)  )

1. I respect your opinion, but I'd still love to try it.
2. Good question. Answer #4 should answer this one, too.
3. No. I can't get the flash to fire, no matter what I try.
4. Will do. Please stand by.

YES!

It's possible your camera *thinks* an external flash is connected. I'm pretty sure someone had a problem where the thing that senses the presence of the flash was stuck, even though they didn't have a flash attached, but I can't seem to find the thread at the moment. It's possible that taking the cover off the flash hot shoe and poking around will resolve the problem.

Here's a thread about the external flash issue http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=8652.msg90471#msg90471

edit:
It looks like the person who had the hot shoe issue had an sx30, but the hardware is similar enough that it's probably still relevant http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=9603.0

Your logic makes sense. Let me look into this and see what I can do. I'll try and make that video of me using P mode today.
