Your logic makes sense. Let me look into this and see what I can do. I'll try and make that video of me using P mode today.
It might be more productive to verify whether the Canon firmware does indeed think an external flash is connected.

I would expect there to be some indications in the UI, but since I don't have this camera, I don't know exactly what they would be.

I think you have a hardware problem with the hotshoe as reyalp suggested.

In M mode there should be a flash disabled icon showing above the flash exposure compensation on the right hand side of the LCD. This should change to flash enabled if the flash is raised.

In your video this is missing, which means the camera thinks there is a flash in the hotshoe which is turned off.

The CHDK override is working - otherwise the Canon shutter display would not be showing 15 seconds when you half press the shutter. But the camera is overriding it again when you do the full press because it thinks there is a flash attached - this happens on all my cameras with hotshoes.

Also when you reset the Canon settings, make sure 'Safety Shift' is disabled as this can also affect the CHDK overrides.

@philmoz: is there a physw bit for the hotshoe switch? If so, masking it might be a fairly simple workaround for people who have this problem. Or at least a test of the theory.

Of course, if the camera is under warranty, fixing it is a better option...

Here's a video of me resetting the Canon and CHDK settings, then attempting to override Canon's 15 second shutter with a 2 minute shutter. I end up with about a half second shutter. Can someone at least verify that I'm configuring the CHDK override correctly?

What part of 'your camera has a hardware fault' are you not understanding?

The camera thinks there is an external flash inserted into the hotshoe - until you get this fixed the CHDK overrides will not work.

Safety Shift? Are you referring to "Safety MF"?

I posted that video in response to @waterwings.

YES! AT LONG @#$% LAST, YES! I removed the little black thing from the external flash mount, and BOOM - the camera flashes like a drunk chick at Mardi Gras. Also, the CHDK override worked like a charm. Here's a pic of the little bastard in question:

This is the hot shoe:

You can't help but notice the Nikon branding - could this have been the problem all along? The Nikon part appearing to fit the hole, but falsely pressing some switch that tells the camera that there's an external flash attached?

All's well that ends well, and I sincerely thank each and every one of you that helped me with this. You guys rock!
