Zoom & Shutter won't work with CHDK turned on? SX40 HS

I'm very new to CHDK (and photography in general), so I apologize if this turns out to be a dumb question.

But for the life of me, I can't figure this out:

When I have CHDK turned on (power up through play button > menu > update firmware > OK > half-press shutter > ALT/print button to switch CHDK on) I can't take a picture with the shutter button.  I get a box in the lower left-hand corner that reads:

*** Started ***
; )
*** Finished ***
Default Script

But nothing happens.

The zoom is also "frozen" with CHDK on.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm using CHDK version 1.1 for SX40 HS on 8GB PNY Performance SD card.

You need to exit <ALT> mode by  pressing the ALT/Print button again when you wish to take a picture.   When you press the shutter in <ALT> mode you activate the currently loaded script.

With CHDK loaded,  you do not need to be in <ALT> mode for CHDK settings to be in effect.
