First a big thank you to the development team on the wonderful work here! I look forward to learning to tap the full potential of this entry level P&S.

I've successfully installed the latest stable 1.2 CHDK version for my A4000IS (firmware 1.01b) on a 32GB Patriot LX series SD card. Coming from a dSLR background I am interested in exploring the RAW capabilities of the camera (which actually is my wife's - she's happy to just P&S). I note that the OSD shows an initial RAW count capacity for the card as "110!" which seems a low number for the 32GB card. Is there a simple explanation for this and the significance of the exclamation mark "!"?

And I also note the DNG files generated were a constant  24,769,494 bytes regardless of the exposure parameters,  surprisingly large and almost comparable in size to the range of RAW .CR2 files from my full frame 5D Mark III.

BTW the RAWs in DNG format were readily opened in Adobe Camera Raw (both in Photoshop CS6 and within Lightroom 4) and Total Commander, TC, (in a Windows 7, 64- bit computer). However, strangely the size shown in TC is only half of the true size (4608x3456) shown in PS and in the corresponding jpegs.

Are you sure it's an "!", not an additional digit that's being cut off? With a 32 gb card and roughly 25mb per shot, you should have ~1000 shots. I think the OSD is only formatted for 3 digits.

CHDK DNGs are uncompressed, so they will always be (sensor width * sensor height * sensor bpp)/8 bytes, plus the negligible size of the DNG header and thumbnail. I believe Canon uses lossless compression on their raws.

I don't know about TC specifically, but some programs default to loading large raw files at 50% for performance reasons.

Yes, it is a "!" after the 110. The three digit format would explain it. I'll report on this after I've shot a few more RAWs.

Thanks, I should have checked the DNG files from the dSLR - I've routinely just stuck with the CR2 format in my PP.

It's Irfanview rather than TC which is just the file manager (late night slip). Good to hear this is a common phenomenon for such viewers (simple editors).

The other question I have relates to the <ALT> button. How does one review a capture on the A4000IS if this button invokes CHDK?

One poster in another thread has mentioned that he had remapped <ALT> to the Help button (can't recall the thread at the moment. How easy is it to do this? I can dust the rust from my Basic but not the C required for the main code.

Long press for original button operation.  Short press to enter/exit ALT mode.

It's easy.  Activate CHDK Menu, go to  CHDK Settings -> <ALT> Mode Button  [Help]

Thanks for the tips, nafraf! So straight forward and easy when one knows how!

I wasn't aware of these simple procedures in the CHDK users' manual and the CHDK for Dummies manual. Of course I could have missed it in the big users' manual which I'm still digesting. Else I think it worthwhile to add the tips in the for Dummies manual.

The Dummies manual is getting more & more out of date.  If you wanted to volunteer to do a refresh that would be great.

Irfanview was actually the "some programs" I had in mind ;) There's an option to turn it off somewhere in the Irfanview settings.
